People's weight, diet, eating habits, are not anybody's business, especially the government's.

Since the government provides for many people's health care, they should have an interest in reducing obesity, smoking, etc. The many health complications caused by obesity and such increases overall health care costs, which is a burden on everyone.

I don't want to give the government more power, but unless we do away with the FDA, they have some power regarding food. I just want them to use that power to require truth in labeling, not legal jargon.

Every time we let the government gets involved in our lives we lose a little bit of freedom...it's none of their business how I or anyone else eats....funny how liberals think the government needs to leave them alone about smoking weed, but wants them to regulate our food..

Not if it impacts the rest of us through increased healthcare costs.

Cant you see it's the rich white guys that make people fat. They suck up all the profits while they sell roman noodles to the people on food stamps. This is discrimination!!!!!!!

Well, I'd say that the healthcare isn't any of their business (because it really isn't) but they seem to have made it their business, so why don't they tell me what to eat as well! Ad then they can put me on strings and make me dance like a puppet!

Genetically Modified foods (AKA GMOs) - last month they approved GMO salmon, but it doesn't have to be labeled GMO.

Obese folks are the last of the different people that it's politically correct to discriminate against. Can't wait till obese people are a protected class just like same sex couples.

The problem is they don't die. They make healthcare expensive and live on drugs they wouldn't need if they'd just lose weight.

B/c obesity isn't caused by toxins etc. (tho it can contribute) it's caused by unhealthy eating & immobility. People need to take personal responsibility & it's not the role of gov. to coddle adults. However u can try to eat healthy but still pump ur body full of toxins. Gov has control over that.

If someone could invent a salad that taste like a cheeseburger, they would make a fortune, and solve the obesity problem at the same time !

More than 60 percent of our healthcare costs are related to smoking and obesity. Why should the government not seek to reduce costs related to healthcare and in the process positively impact lives?

Wouldn't it be funny if the founding fathers wrote that into the Constitution..." And government shall not let the people build up the lipids of intolerance, thus allowing the people's weight to be maintained by legislative and executive powers."

....On second thought, congress should amend this XD

"Should the government be doing more—" No.
"Should there be a new law—" No.
"Should we ban—" No.
How much more should power be shifted from the citizens to the government? None. We should de-centralize power, give it to the people.

If the government wants to encourage healthy eating, they could start by dropping taxes from healthy foods.

Like parents taking responsibility by teaching healthy eating habits to their children? Or do you mean more federal funding to power point presentations in schools that kids won't watch or pay attention to anyway?

It's mostly the government's fault in the first place anyway. By subsidizing crops like corn that have so real nutritional benefit, food makers had an abundance, and hence made High Fructose Corn Syrup and they slap it into everything to save money.

No. More insurance companies should participate in programs that encourage healthy decisions. Many already give rebates if you go to the dentist, optometrist, primary care etc. they should all do that. It's cheaper for them in the long run.

Yes, we need to make it so it isn't cheaper to buy your child a cheeseburger from McDonald's than a salad from a grocery store. We need to make genetic modifications something that needs to be stated on foods.

Maybe I want to be fat. Maybe my friend is 5' 2" and 90 lbs and she needs to gain weight. Are you going to outlaw us from having bacon because I will raise pigs just so I can hand out free bacon on the street corner just so I can show you that it doesn't matter what you say.

They've already cut school lunches to practically starve children. What are they going to do next? Root through children's lunches to make sure they are healthy? No. It's already bad enough that I have to put up with a raise in prices for less food, but eventually it has to stop.

With freedom comes consequences.
Maybe if the govt didn't try to insulate ppl from the consequences of their actions then ppl would take more responsibility for their lives.
