At the request of his wife, an Iowa dentist fired a female assistant because she was "irresistible and a threat to his marriage." She sued, claiming discrimination. The Iowa Supreme Court ruled in favor of the dentist. Good call?
She looks okay. I wouldn't go so far as to call her a deal breaker for a marriage.
Discrimination is natural and sensical in a lot of situations, except for race discrimination. I oppose hiring woman as firefighters - they're not up to the task, and old men aren't either. Not hiring people whose English is poor makes sense when hiring for a teacher or customer svc. position.
Yeah. That's true. But case law from a State Supreme Court isn't something I'd be so ready to stand behind. Which is exactly why this is so controversial. Because its sketchy as f***
He hired her because he wanted to do some work on her. (And I ain't talkin' about teeth.)
You masterbate with Vaseline? (Seriously that is all I got out of that comment.)
The only good call here is his wife leaving him and taking the house.
It should have cost him. It's not like she wasn't attractive when he hired her.
hopefully, that's the case.
Bottom line, she couldn't demonstrate that she was in a protected class. The law is the law, and most employment agreements say that either side can terminate without cause. That said, the public can weigh in with their choice of the caliber of person they want doing their dentistry.
good for him, but screw her? really? The guy has a problem and it's her fault?
if he's attracted to her it's just a matter of time before it's someone else (which, of course, will also be her fault).
I mean, he essentially said that there are circumstances in which he would sacrifice his marriage for something else....great guy.
Even "below insurance adjusters," RJ, you evil, evil person, you.
Good for him! If more husbands honored their wives (and vice versa) maybe people would be less willing to divorce and more willing to work it out and carry through with their vows.
I think the wife is just jelous
I think this guy has bigger issues. This poor woman got caught in the middle of it.
The dentist's wife must have been afraid he was drilling more than just teeth...
Ugh the private sector does build all of those things it called taxes!
As funny as it sounds, no, it's not a good call.
He should learn some self control. If she was a threat to their marriage... maybe that marriage isn't all that strong. Probably not worth staying in.
you must be talking about my post at :16 below.
Hahaha this woman had no rights. She must have done something to instigate this.
My money says she hit on him so he took action.
The courts didn't see it as discrimination.
Your opinion is your opinion. My opinion is my opinion backed by case law.
He may not be in business for long, but he will still be married. He is not firing her because of her gender or because of her race or something like that. People do this without being as honest all the time. They discriminate against overweight people or people that are not attractive all the time.
Ahh, I see RJ the hate mongering Internet troll is in full force yet again.
and a Merry Christmas to you too!
Merry Christmas everyone.
No matter what side of an issue you are, I hope you have a great Christmas with you and yours. Don't let stuff said on this app ruin your day. Hope you all come back real soon and rejoin the great royal rumble that is SoH
he's making tough choices? firing someone for being who they are. yeah, tough choice. just not as tough as keeping his pecker in his pants or maybe seeking marriage counseling. that would be asking too much.
He replaced her, so it was not a layoff.
Technically a "layoff" is different than firing. A layoff is because the position is no longer necessary or because the company had to downsize. In most places if you lay someone off you cannot hire someone else for their previous position unless you offer them their job back first.
worse...an insurance adjuster. that's hurtful.
Lightsabr- you attacked him first. Calling him a lowlife etc...
he should not be afforded all the rights and protections granted to him by the United States of America to run his business and not play by the rules we all have to abide by.
it's called a civil society for a reason.
It is not ethical but it is legal. You should be able to fire anyone for any reason. If an employer is stupid enough to fire someone because of race, gender, religion, or good looks he won't be in business for long.
I don't think it was because she was pretty. I think he was fostering lustful feelings for her. In that way it's his fault, but I'm not sure firing her was the only way to fix things.
Palindrome, he's making tough choices to save his family. No one's molesting or beating anyone. Go away, troll.
I assure you, it is NOT random.
Justice? Where do you find that?
Seriously, we may agree that it wasn't fair but if she was relieved of a bad situation and moved on to a better job her damages would be different than if she lost the only high paying job available to her.
Or do you just think she is due all she can take?
You just get your kicks from randomly attacking people online.
circumstances than your boss causing you to lose you livelihood over something you can't help or change that in no way interferes with your ability to do the job.
Firing someone and choosing to work for someone/choosing to leave that job are two totally separate categories and there's good reason that there are laws for one and not for the other.
The employer holds power over the employee. Choosing to leave a job is a completely separate set of…
Stick around here longer. You'll read things that will shock you every day. It's entertaining in a somewhat sick and twisted way. Like, you want to look away... But you want to see how it ends too
Look, an employer can be a jerk, but that does not make it illegal. The gal is better off not working for someone like that...probably a blessing in disguise.
And why did it take him 10 years to fire her?
Why did he hire her in the first place if he knew his weaknesses?
It's very obviously discrimination. Why you can't see that is up for debate. But I'm pretty sure almost everyone sees this as discrimination. The major issue up for debate is whether the discrimination was justified
is it also going to be the Vaseline's fault when he gets caught masturbating in a public bathroom?
I bet you lightsabr is one of those "family needs to stay together NO MATTER WHAT" folks who blames the daughter for daddy molesting her and blames mom for daddy getting drunk and beating her. Sometimes I can't believe we're in 2012 when I come to these comment boards
