At the request of his wife, an Iowa dentist fired a female assistant because she was "irresistible and a threat to his marriage." She sued, claiming discrimination. The Iowa Supreme Court ruled in favor of the dentist. Good call?

If she was intentionally turning him on, then yes. But if it was a situation that sheerly involved the dentist's lack of self-control, then no. Rather than her being fired, the dentist needs to find a way to control his actions.

The dentist wanted to bang her and didn't trust HIS control of HIS urges so he fired HER?! It's incredible that people side with the dentist over her; am I missing something? Are there really this many sexist people on this app?

If he's so creepy and she's so talented then she was better off leaving.

Her firing was her gain, his loss.
He's the one with damages caused by his wife, not the assistant.

The boss can't control himself, so he fires a long-term employee? That sounds like the boss, not the employee, is the one with the problem. I *love* how people solve internal problems by blaming others for them. No, nothing wrong with me, it's all YOUR fault my penis wants to stick you. Disgusting.

It is a sorry excuse to fire someone because you can't control your lust. I understand that employers have the right to hire and fire whoever for whatever.

He shouldn't have hired her in the first place if he can't trust himself around beautiful women.

if you own a small business, you should be able to hire and fire whoever you want. it doesn't say much for the dentist's self control though. adults should be able to handle themselves...(no pun intended)

Firing someone because you find them physically attractive? This sounds like a bad joke. That's pitiful.

That's not a right reason to fire somebody but I believe someone should be able to fire anybody they want for any reason because its their company and they are the boss

There can be sexual chemistry between any two people, regardless of how beautiful they are. It should not be grounds for firing because the boss can't keep his lust to himself. If she was doing her job and not coming on to him, She should sue him for all he's worth! Creep!

I read the story and agree with Tony. The guy absolutely did not trust himself.
What I found odd though is why did it take him 10 years to decide he was too attracted to her?

So let me get this straight a dentist fired an assistant because she was beautiful and his insecure wife was scared of her. Where is the justice this women has no job because she is beautiful. That is sickening

When you lack confidence in yourself and don't know your own value, temptation and fantasy abound. It sounds like he is feeling like a victim. When they go full circle they become bullies. Bullies feel like the victim while inflicting pain on others. There is a pattern here.

I think the dentist is a wise man who loves his wife. If he fired somebody for his wife he is keeping his promise to his wife to stay faithful in there marriage

Not a good idea due to conflict of interest for the family relationship.

That is great for the "hiring process". However once you hire someone, you can't just fire them without a good reason. People make major financial decisions based on their jobs and as long as you are doing it well (no verbal or written warnings) you should not have to worry about being fired.

She should have sued for sexual harassment instead. He was telling her her appearance made a "bulge in his pants" and likened her body to Lamborgini. Inappropriate talk from him and she gets fired?! To "save his marriage". What a creep. Creepy employer, creepy husband, creepy dentist.

Can you imagine working with a group of ladies, your wife and possessive controlling attitude? This sounds like a recipe for stress. He needs some confidence and calm reassurance in his life. That will destroy any man if he lets it ride. Does he have confidence in himself to do the right thing?

Derb, teachers who do not do their jobs are fired. They usually resign. Don't buy the myth. If employers/ supervisors have clear criteria and keep proper performance data, then due process is followed. An irritated boss, hungover boss, or power trip boss, or this guys wife, ought not make the case.

There are dress codes and disciplinary action for conduct. If there was no warnings or requests for more professional conduct then there is a communication protocol issue. I would want to be given the opportunity to change or find another job before getting thrown out.

I had a friend say this often, until he was fired without cause ...changed his thinking, perhaps it would yours? People have families, bills and dreams. People are not toys to play with at will. You folks who believe like this guy obviously have no concern for fellow man. To fire?Compassion required

It sounds like that poor man has problems... He is trying to protect his marriage and business. It sounds like any kind woman would be a threat to his wife. It is hard to know without the facts. In any event there is some form of dysfunction. Was she harassing or tempting him? His business.

Mac: I agree that's how it should work, but the problem is that it would be impossible to build a case for poor work for everyone to be fired (look at how much evidence they need to fire teachers).

An employer should be able to hire and fire for any reason! Excluding race, religion, and gender.
A modeling agency doesn't need to hire a lumberjack and a lumberjack doesn't need to hire a model.
Sometimes looks are part of the job and are thus not protected.
Good call!
