Are Christmas trees or nativity scenes in public places (city hall, etc.) a violation of the 1st Amendment clause: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."?

Respect others beliefs? As your putting yours all over public property?

Honestly I never heard such insecure people as Christians. The need to let everyone know you're one is leading me to believe you all suffer from low self-esteem. If you're god can see what's in your mind or you're heart like you think , just wanting to do it should suffice. We get it, you live god.

It's about our GOVERNMENT showing respect to religion. The constitution clearly and explicitly tells our government NOT TO RESPECT ANY RELIGION in any official capacities. That includes public buildings. Keep that stuff to yourself. It's not that hard

Yeah, how would Muhammad beside Jesus offensive? How is Buddha at a government building offensive? I agree, just don't use my tax dollars to display fictional characters.

Mitt, not to mention the possibility that none of the "known" gods may also be the right one. Could be one no one knows about.

Government can not promote or exclude any one religion. It does not mean it has to be free of religion.

Bkk must not know what Jefferson, Madison , Franklin said about God if he's saying that. But then again, he was educated in my state so of course his history is distorted. Outside of Louisville, it's the 1800's here.

I can not stand the people who bitch about holiday displays. How is a tree offensive? How is Christians showing respect towards Jesus offensive? How is a Menorah offensive? Do you want us to remove all decorations sold at stores too? Respect others beliefs!

Why in the world do people keep saying atheism is a religion?
Is it ignorance or an attempt at being funny?

Maybe you should go back and look at our founders and the reference to God.

11/27/12 7:12 pm

Forget all that, I got better thing to do than to get lost in your cloud. Read the poll question. Is there an established law requiring such displays. Notice there are only 2 ways to answer this question, either a "yes", or a "No"

You mean your loving god will burn me for eternity if I'm wrong? Wait a minute, if he can see the future and knows I'm not going to accept Jesus as my savior, why would he even create me? So he can burn me when I die? tell me more about gods grace

Why does government have to choose any religion? Deciding what's good for people shouldn't be influenced by 2000 year old books. Democracy by the way isn't a Christian invention nor have they perfected it. If anything they have corrupted it.

It amazes me the exceptions made for this law. Religion does not belong in political and state life.

Keep it out. We mustn't empower that type of behavior or attitude. By allowing religion to encroach on our govt, fools like him feel in the right when this country was founded on escaping religious idiots

If you chose the right god to worship from the 2000 known deities humans have ever worshiped, assuming at least one of those is even correct. Good luck with that.

Bbkkanders pretty much sums up precisely why all religious displays etc should be kept strictly out of govt buildings etc.. When he said "if you don't like it there are plenty of other countries you can move to", THAT was EXACTLY the kind of BS the founders of this country wanted to nip in the bud

Lets say I started a new religion. My religious holiday symbol is a giant poster of gay sex. If the government puts up a nativity scene, then they have to put up mine as well. Freedom of speech and religion and all that.

Gifts were part of the solstice not part of the Christian hijacking of the holiday. The tree isn't a religious symbol either.

I have way better morals than any Christian does. You see I'm not going to be forgiven for things like murder and other crimes. I'll have to be good without a god to wash away all my sins. Christian " morality " is a myth like your god.

Anyway thugs like @ishady who have zero to little morals just learned something his pea brain didn't know. I still bet with his nasty language he takes off this holiday we have used for years to celebrate Christ's birth. I bet he takes a gift if anyone likes him enough to give him one.

If you honestly think Christmas is Jesus's birth, then you're several months late. Jesus was born in the spring and Christmas was originally a solstice festival.

Very true but we use this day to celibate the birth of Christ. I do not think Christ was born in July but more in the fall of the year but that's a diff conversation. My b-day is July 2 but I didn't celebrate until Aug so my family could be there. I still calibrated though and called it my day

Not a Christian holiday, 1. Jesus really born in July 2. Romans had a holiday first we stole it (see comment above)

I'm gonna agree with Sheldon Cooper on this. People shouldn't throw out their beliefs like a whore show, but should acknowledge the true origins of the holiday. To raise awareness, I will now only call it Saturnalia for now on.

Christmas is a Christian holiday. You don't like it, there are a lot of countries you can move to . I bet you take the day off on this Christian holiday. Fact is government closes on this Christian holiday. Again, you don't like it, move or turn your head when you go by but stop whining.
