I believe so...Who the hell writes for Webster I wonder?

AnnieM The Island

But not quite enough of a nerd to know whether to use then or than. ;)

I mean this as a lighthearted joke, not an insult, by the way.

Hmmmmm overachieving isn't exactly the same as being nerdy...

So apparently democrats are nerdier than republicans? Or maybe they'll just admit it more often than reps do...

It's not a mindset I understand in the least, but I know it exists.

AnnieM The Island

Yeah, I know far, far, far too many people that actually aren't the least bit interested or intrigued by anything scientific or philosophic (or, really, anything else -ic) to believe that's true. Probably 85% of my family fits in that category.

I played video games until 3am last night sooooo yeah.

I can kind of relate. As a teen I wasn't a nerd or a geek so much as I was a 'freak.' ("art freak" usually) Now, somehow my husband and most of my friends are considered nerds, but that train passed me up. I know just enough to not be cool, but not enough to be nerdy. ;)

Somehow, though, if your hobby of choice that consumes 90% of your life is something athletic like biking, marathon running or hiking, I feel like it would be far less likely and far more ingenuous for that person to be called a 'nerd.'

AnnieM The Island
01/19/13 7:03 pm

Praet, I kind of disagree, I would probably describe that sort of person (or most likely not be surprised if he/she describes him/herself as such) a 'birding nerd.'

Praet- just email polls@showofhands.mobi That's all it does when you submit one anyway.

It depends on your definition of nerd.. We read an article on the different ways of looking at the term in my AP English class... I said yes anyway. ????

So my use of the term 'name nerd' in describing myself is etymologically accurate. :)

@JD : a certified nerd means that losing an online game means everything to you but losing your virginity nothing.

@Early: I was a Travian addict.
Don't know how many times for a year I had to set the alarm to do an insertion or snipe and when the enemy WW was close to stage 100 my 50K TT hammer (I was Gaul as you see) barely did a scratch - I should have built more catas).
Our alliance still won in the end :)

Nerd:

1.
a stupid, irritating, ineffectual, or unattractive person.
2.
an intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a nonsocial hobby or pursuit: a computer nerd.

3. a carnival performer who performs sensationally morbid or disgusting acts, as biting off the head of a live chicken.

Geek:
1. a computer expert or enthusiast (a term of pride as self-reference, but often considered offensive when used by outsiders.)
2. a peculiar or otherwise dislikable person, especially one who is perceived to be overly intellectual.

I am a drama/choir nerd.

But I said no to this question because I feel like in general the term "nerd" refers to a math/science person. Maybe that's just me though.

Keep in mind the typical SOH user demographic. We are a small subset of the country and more likely than most to be interested in what this app has to offer than those who don't identify themselves as nerds in society at large.
