Teacher told me once not to pick on the nerds because they will be my boss one day. Wish I would have listened.

Back in my day, nerds were the opposite of being cool. I was way to cool to be a nerd.
These days, I'm not cool enough to be a nerd.
Life is cruel.

Yeah, nerd culture has really broken out into the mainstream in the last few decades. "Nerd" used to have a much more negative connotation. Now people tend to define "nerd" as "intelligent, tech savvy, and socially deviant". They watch a Marvel movie, buy an iPhone, and call themselves a nerd.

Absolutely! My gifted class and I get upset if we get anything under about a 95, depending on whatever it is. Hey, at least I don't fail just about every class I have like the other kids in my school

I'm proud to be one.

I debated asking "Are you a nerd/geek?" but I didn't want to read 100 comments from both arguing that nerds and geeks aren't the same thing.

It's interesting how the connotations of 'nerd' has flipped since the 1980s. Probably has something to do with those same nerds now ruling the tech world and have defined modern social interactions.

...Also, what happened to the sub-requirements like, D&D junkie, fantasy/sci-fi reader, social outcast etc? (The answer is, that nerdiness has become a socially acceptable thing, and has been bastardized in order to conform to the whims of mainstream culture.)

To be a combination of Albert Einstein and Arnold Schwarzenegger is cool - unless you have Einstein's body and Schwarzenegger's brain ;)
This quip isn't mine but from a song of an Austrian rock band.

I don't think i fit the definition, but there's definitely something off about me. I used to be rather intelligent (not so much now). Shy, socially awkward. Into technology but I just want it to work & be pleasant to use; I don't want to *make* it work myself or be oblivious to beauty. Science geek.

What is not a nerd:
1) someone with social skills
2) someone with athletic ability
3) someone with a nice tan
4) someone you look forward to seeing
5) someone who is fashionable

Nerds are people who are allowed to obsess over the small things, be intelligent and not care about the latest star gossip. They can be themselves because they don't want or need to feel validated by society.
