Should the U.S. refrain from taking a military action because the U.N. Security Council doesn't approve of it?
Oops typo "security council disapproves"
The United States should always act in its best interests with regard only for our closet allies (Israel and England).
Respect doesn't mean treat like authority.
The US should not get in everyone else's business. If we are attacked we need to just blow the nation that attacked off the face of the earth problem solved. Who needs the Middle East anyway.
I know there is no world government silly. I'm saying we should respect international law because I personally think many of them (like the rules set at the Geneva convention) are things we should be doing no matter what, regardless what the international community thinks.
If the UN should have veto power over our military action then heck no. If god forbid we ever do need to act and the security council approves it I would hope we act
Actually let me kinda clarify. In most cases yeah we probably should but not because we should allow the UN to have authority over us but because unilateral military engagement rarely solves anything, and is usually not necessary. (Hence why no-one will go in with us. If the question is asking
it all depends on the situation. we definitely don't want another Vietnam. I think the only time the American armed forces should get involved is when life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is at stake.
There is no world government. The US is sovereign. What you call "international law" is simply the set of rules the US voluntarily agrees to follow as established by treaties ratified by our congress.
The UN is BS and should be desolved it is too liberal and countries should do what they want without the UN butting in.
The UN has been a joke since its inception in 1945. Prior to that, the League of Nations was just as much of a joke. It's just another meaningless body meant to provide the illusion of security. If countries want to talk, they have Ambassadors. You know, like Chris Stevens in Benghazi, Libya....
No. Should we respect international law and take into account the opinion of the international community? Absolutely. But the only one who should have the final say about our military action is us. I would hope we never act unilaterally though.
You obviously have no idea how the UN security council works. Any of the five permanent members of the council (US, UK, France, China, Russia) can veto any UNSC resolution for any reason. This kills the resolution dead. No 2/3 overrule like congress.
The largest periods of growth in human history have followed global conflicts, do you think this is a coincidence?
At this point...I think we should refrain from military action if anyone asks, much less the UN.
However, if Canada says so much as a word, we should turn that whole place into another state.
War is a nessacary mechanism in our global system.
World peace is unrealistic, the simple fact that people have thier own opinions promises this ongoing fact.
No, for the sole fact that we will do it anyway
Look how that has worked in the past!
Name one time when we didn't have their approval and it wasn't something we should have done?
The truth is we ARE already one group and guess what? Some of us dont like the others based on difference and materials possed.
I would like to hear one realistic idea besides an attack from outside our planet that will unite us all under this one fluffy unrealistic banner of love...
AND SCREW THE UN.
To be clear, keep the cool weapons programs, research, keep the military strong, just scale down for the role of defense instead of world policing.
I said yes, but I think we might take it. I just think we should think it over more carefully if they don't recommend it before we actually do it.
I'm a former Marine and a die-hard conservative and I'm frankly tired of attacking.
How about we close all our foreign bases, shrink the military to the size suitable for national defense, not world policing\domination, mind our business, and pay down the deficit?
I voted no but not BECAUSE of the UN
Because we should stop taking military actions period
The UN is not American and therefore should not decide on American issues
Better to attack than defend, this is basic BASIC strategy.
The only way we will EVER have no need of our armies and there wars is if people like YOU can convince our enimies to love us.
....and yea...good luck with that one -_-
The UN is trying to protect the world from another world war. You think we'll all have justice and freedom once another world war breaks out?
Screw Iran and North Korea as well
…said Iran and North Korea.
Aww, heck with the Klingons! You blow up one little outlying moon...
Screw the U.N. we don't need their approval or support.
Great point. Don't follow anybody blindly.
Yes I know, but you will notice that the three main axis powers: Nazi Germany, Japan, and Italy, all left it around 1935. These countries were the aggressors and had been ignoring it for a long time. I see a connection, albeit a non major one.
We shouldn't be taking military action in the first place. Get the hell out of everyone's business, America. We dont need to be spending money to help other countries when we need help even more.
Not sure what your point is but..
Germany did not follow the military they followed a leader that had promised them hope and change for a new Germany.
The UN needs to be abolished, the system of globalizm is a tyranical machine that needs to be wiped from the face of the earth.
Liberty,freedom,and justice...FOR ALL.
Not if they just disapprove. Maybe if it was a definitive "no."
I mean, What if we had listened to the Natzis back in the 30s and 40s? Like their people did so blindly supporting their military!
No - we are a sovereign country. We should consider the opinions of our allies but we have to act independently, in the best interests of the American people. Now if congress would just act in our interests!
Not all actions are known or go through regular approval channels. We have many ways to skin a cat.
Why? So we can fight the Klingons?
Stop sending our tax money to the UN.
We bow to NONE!!! F@&! The UN we should never ask permission
The UN is a joke. When CHINA of all countries is on the human rights commission, how can you take them seriously?
We should just mind our own business period
Actually its quite an enlightened statement. Clearly above your head.
Ok, all of you that say yes, how about "should the US take military action if the UN says we should?" C'mon, we don't cow tow to the UN! They don't have our best interests in mind.
