Nothing like short-shorts and getting up at 6:30 in the morning to run for 7 or 8 miles!!

@westmont
Swimming has way more cardio effect. You use your whole body instead of just your legs.

Not a runner, but more of a brisk walker.

@ScottsTots yup. As long as you aren't physically damaging your brain, or doing too much with a heart condition, or anything else like that, all forms of exercise work wonders.

It's silly to say one is better than the other. If you are out exercising, good for you, keep it up. If you're not, find some time, start slow and build up. It's good for your health, good for your family, good for your confidence.

Yes! I workout with weights and do plyometrics 4 days a week, but they do not give me the high I get from running! Getting ready for my first half-marathon in October!

@itsthapooh there are still plenty of folks reaching adults how to swim. If you're willing to spend the time, money, and willpower, you can learn how to swim.

I walk around my track..I still have a few too many folds of flab to run..lol

I'm doing the c25k program too. I stopped running recently to focus on summer classes. Just started again this morning. I don't love running yet, but I'm getting there.

07/16/12 7:19 am

Working my way through the couch to 5k program right now. I don't know how to swim so that's not an option for me, and I use to walk 3 miles every night with my mother but I needed more of a challenge.

Yes, I enjoy races, which my boyfriend & I do every month (just did the Peachtree Road Race 10K in Atlanta on 4th of July). However,I never get that runner's high people talk about. I don't love it, but find I stay in the best shape when I'm running.

@wedaslaves here's a thought though. If mankind was made to run and at some point in time had to run just to get food to survive, maybe that chemical reaction was part of that in order to "keep us off our lazy bums" as some say, allowing us to survive. Curious thought.

If you're out of the saddle and doing 20 rpm, you so need to downshift your gears.

@jms as long as you're running how your Newtons are made to run, you should be fine, but just keep barefoot running in your bag of tricks in case you want to try it 30 years from now.

FIAT2LUX On Planet Earth

Swimming is definitely a lot less impact on your joints than running hands down, but anyway. Cycling is usually fine as long as you keep your rpm above 60, otherwise what I keep seeing is people say that it puts undue stress on your knees. I know that when I do 20 rpm, they're not joking…

westmont
07/16/12 6:12 am

Swimming is better, it has the same cardio effect as running but it's low impact on your joints.

@padave
Really? Running is the only way to keep lean? I swim for two hours every weekday morning and have meets on Saturdays. I'm 5'11" and 120 pounds. I have never run more than a mile straight in my life. Swimming is probably the best form of exercise you can do

Biking four miles is equivalent to running one. Biking is not better than running for burning calories. It's obviously better on the joints though. I miss running. Due to a back problem exacerbated by running I'm resigned solely to working out at the gym. Used to run 30 miles a week and go to gym.

I run 5 miles every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Upper body workouts on Wednesday, stretches/yoga for Monday's... I honestly hate running, but when I'm done I feel fantastic for the rest of the day.

I've never met anyone or anything scary enough that would require me to practice running from. What's the point of becoming a runner, and practicing running every day, if you aren't going to need the skill at some point?

If I'm to exercise why would I do so in the most mind numbingly boring way? Sure, some of our Presidents have been joggers, but Theodore Roosevelt beat the shit out of people in boxing and judo. That seems more fun.

Fiat- my ortho dr. and I talked about barefoot running. There are some people who should absolutely NOT do it! It's just the way their body is formed. He said I should be fine with my orthotics.

And I LOVE my Newtons!!! Best runs ever in those!!

wedaslaves- yes, there is actually a chemical reaction when you run. It is a true high!! It's one of the reasons I miss running!! I always have a better day after a couple miles in the morning!!!
And I'm a 'heavy boned' person. Add to that I'm female and well-endowed. Running is still great!!!

..and once my body adjusts to them, I'm good to go and my running won't cause problems. And running didn't cause the problems in the first place. Moving to a new house did. All the climbing of stairs with heavy loads, etc. did far more harm than running. Just because it might be the wrong...

409- my orthopedic dr. says it's great for you. The problems usually come from body structure problems. For example, my feet are tilted out a bit. It causes the plantar fascia to stretch a bit more than it should. I'm dealing with plantar fasciitis right now but I got orthotics...

I walk with my dog about 4 or 5 times a day for a total of between 1 to 2 hours. The hotter it gets, the more she wants to jog. I think she is trying to kill me.
