"Anything that tells you how to behave is unnatural, therefore you have the right to challenge it." This is a non-sequitur, false logic.

And Haley.. You are ankle deep by now in philosophical BS!
How do you judge your own conscience? Natural or not?

Philosophy is literally driving me crazy lol

And I don't know where my conscience comes from. Part of it may be unnatural. But there are probably natural parts to it.

Weird. I used to hate philosophy

Sure. Society tells us that jealousy, anger, hate, envoy, selfishness are all bad. And yet they are all natural

I may agree with the conclusion , but the premise used is false...

Anything? As in everything in the universe anything?
So when my stomach tells me I'm hungry, I should fight it?
When my eyes see there is a person in the road and I should stop the car I shouldn't believe in the no killing law?
Anything? No..,

Absolute nonsense. The Bible is not "unnatural." It does indeed tell you how to behave, but it comes from the One Who made us in the first place. You can't get more natural than that.

Gravity tells you how to behave. Pretty sure it's natural...

I'm stunned and at a loss that so many disagreed. Challenge everything, but especially challenge those who would interfere with your absolute right to find and follow your own path. The right behavior for you is what feels right to you. Always.

Yes challenge them! Not disregard them, but certainly try to get them fixed. If nobody challenged them we'd still be crawling along at 55.

So the law telling you not to murder should be challenged? It is the absoluteness (is that a word?) of the statement that caused me to disagree. Often, yes, maybe even most of the time, but "anything"? No.

DaveL: Again, it's an important distinction between challenge and disregard. At some point some people must have challenged the rule against killing and decided that it was okay in defense of the state or as punishment for a crime.

Shall we challenge the ideology that we must challenge everything?

ThePhlegm The Lone Star State

Just now you are telling them how to behave. And following your own advice, I should ignore you...

Few can rise to the challenge of challenging everything without infringing on the rights of others.

As far as morality is concerned: completely opposite. The natural tendency is selfishness and we will lie, steal, and kill if it's between us and anyone else. Immorality has an "us vs. them" mentality subtly underneath.

I don't think parents telling young children how to behave is unnatural.

Yes, but it's also ok for the child to question its parents.

Why be sorry? It taught me respect and discipline- something that many kids in today's society sorely lack.

MrLove lovers, dreamers and me
02/03/14 1:58 pm

No. Kids today are over disciplined, that's why they act foolish when away from their parents. They get to act like kids, but over emphasize it since they aren't allowed to be free when their parents are around.

Some people have a natural tendency question everything (me). Nothing wrong with but you will be viewed with suspicion by the less curious.

XercesBlue ...
02/03/14 9:15 am

This implies you don't have the right to challenge that which is natural...

Its unnatural for an 18 year old to ask questions like this when half the country is still sleeping!

You have the right to challenge it, doesn't mean you are going to win. For example any law outlawing murders never getting over turned.

I disagreed as the first thing that came to mind was instincts. Instincts can tell you how to behave, and in my head, are pretty natural.

That's not like a institution or set of rules telling you how to behave though.

I know that isn't entirely clear in the question, but I don't think instincts *tell* you how to behave.

I get what you're saying though.

That's how I read it too presrvd, like... "My conscience is telling me I shouldn't rape that woman, but I'm going to question that. What if rape is the right thing to do?" Just want to clarify that's a hypothetical, I'm not actually thinking that...
