A mother is breast feeding her child in public. Should she cover herself or is it a natural thing?
I think it's disgusting but still a natural thing. Lots of nature is rather gross (e.g., birth). It doesn't mean it has to be hidden away though.
You can nurse without showing anything. I do it all the time. People aren't uncomfortable with women showing part of their boobs, they're uncomfortable with women using their boobs so they're still uncomfortable even when you use a cover.
It's natural but it's out of respect for other people that she should cover up. I always cover just because I don't like being looked at and I'm not comfy with showing myself.
But I don't mind, personally, if she's not covered.
Funny how Republicans are generally harder on Islamic countries than are Democrats...yet Republicans tend to act more like Islamic countries when it comes to enforcing their own ideas of "modesty" and "values."
I think being discreet about it is a common courtesy. Either cover up or go to a removed area. It can't be that difficult.
Once again, people should mind their own business. She is feeding her child.
It's natural, and I feel she should at least cover some. Society considers it tacky to have your boob hanging out, even if there's a babe using it. And I love that she takes care of child, but once society is used to them covering, eventually....
They can cover less and less and the aroma about seeing a woman's breast will go away.
Stigma...not aroma. Wtf
That there is even a question is proof Americans need to travel more. If she tries to figure out how to hide it, it should be for her comfort, not because of what the people around her might "think".
I dont like it. Some if them do it just to prove a point.
Prove a point? Maybe if they are at a protest on the subject.
Think theyre doing it because the baby is hungry. They arent actively trying to offend people. They simply don't care about your feelings. They are being a good mum & taking care of babe.
Meaning: chicken doesn't trust himself.
Did i miss a previous interaction?, Mad
The few that you THINK *may* be proving a point is nothing compared to the amount just trying to feed their child. Who cares if you don't like it?
Only if she doesn't want people looking. It should totally be her choice.
I doubt there are many mothers with their breast swinging freely, without the baby latched/mostly covering her. A little top boob isnt hurting anyone.
I think she should cover herself, only because some people are just really sensitive about the human body. But I think it's completely natural, and it should be socially acceptable to breastfeed in public.
Babies need to eat. Get over it. Boobs are not scary, sexual things. Grow up.
How are you doing today baby I'm really concerned I wish I could just come over and give you great big hug & homemade cinnamon roll
I'm okay. Just trying to let the things he said not bother me, but he knows exactly what to say to get to me.
Cover up as much as you can but it is a natural thing.
People think its gross because they like to objectify women as sex objects. When they see that breasts actually have a purpose other the sexy, they get weirded out. I'm so sick of it, babies need to eat and mothers milk is the best thing for them.
^ this guy
You. You have common sense.
With all the weirdos around now I suggest she cover up but I definitely think she shouldn't HAVE to. The woman is feeding an infant, just let her be! If it disturbs you that's your problem because there is nothing wrong with it.
The two are not mutually exclusive. Taking a poop is a natural thing, too.
Face palm harder; your neurons are not engaging.
You actually think that shitting is the same thing as eating?!?!?!?
No, but it certainly blows the whole "it's natural" argument out of the water.
No, it doesn't. Slap.
Eating is a social behavior, pooping and urinating need to be done separately to maintain health standards.
Yes it does. Clearly, not every natural act is appropriate for public display. If your justification for breast feeding in public is that "it's natural," you have to accept that justification for ANY natural act in public.
Omg, I'm having a hard time staying away from arguing with every ignorant post. It's natural, and if you think they should cover up or not do it, then I hope someone slaps you. I wish I had more time for this today.
Here I am, I can take it! Slap away!
If you don't want to see it, then put a blanket over your head. Asking a baby to eat under a hot blanket, I mean really. A baby is bigger then a bikini.
More - I'm not saying hide it, I'm saying there is a way of being discreet,
Yeah, most women are discrete, but if a baby needs to eat, then a baby needs to eat. Have you ever once seen a breast feeding moms nipple in public?
Go for it guy, I even went nursed when our friends had to leave town and they had an infant daughter . First it was weird and it was just natural. I think she was all of two months old. She was too young to be upset mama was gone.
Natural, but not interested in seeing milk drip down the kids chin.
Or am I....?
All in good fun.
I know and past the grossness, pretty funny :-)
It is natural, but is covering so hard?
When I tried to cover my firstborn, she hated it. She would grab the blanket & wave it like a flag. It drew far more attention to us than just sitting quietly & discreetly without a cover.
@JanuaryLove, I never got to breast feed because my son was so early my milk ha not developed but I know two friends with little girls who do the same thing. It's not uncommon for babies to act like that. Heck, they wanna breath while they eat! :)
Yes, covering can be hard when it's hot, when baby squirms, etc.
January, she sounds like an interesting child.
Tops - She is 16 now and still has definite ideas and opinions about things. She is one of the strongest women I know. That showed up even in infancy. :)
January, one of mine was really interesting at birth to. He's in his 30s now and he always has been a very interesting person.
I'm just going to throw out a plug for my daughter since she's on SoH and has actually recently asked this same question. I happen to think she asks some good questions and should have more followers. Her name is tayen.
How to reply to one of my post or one or one your post happy more than happy to follow her.
Good point, Tops. Wish I could. She's away this week and without wi-fi until Friday or Saturday. I'll have to plug her again next week when I can have her reply. :)
It's natural to pee but I don't do that in front of everyone. It's fine to BF in public but cover up!
See my post one comment above.
These days the nursing bras and shirts are designed to make nursing discreet. Nursing is a beautiful thing but using good judgment is too.
Ty clever :)
Natural. There seems to be this taboo about breast feeding I simply do not understand. Would I cover myself if I was a woman, probably for my own modesty, but being required to is silliness. If we didn't demonize the human body so much I think
This would be a better society. I don't disagree we should wear clothing for all it's practical values. I just think we spend so much time putting good/bad connotations on the human body and it is all very useless.
