Which employee would you prefer? Fred is extremely sociable and well liked but tends to be tardy and a bit too laid back. Daniel is punctual and very efficient but arrogant and cold as ice. Assume both work in-house, no customer contact.

I can put up with almost anything except someone who can't be bothered to show up on time or meet a deadline.

I'd discontinue Fred's employment immediately. Daniel sounds great.

Fred. I wouldn't want so much negativity at the workplace.

Punctual and doesn't hang around the coffee pot making chit chat all day.

Daniel. We can always hire a cheerleader if needbe, but in the meantime we need to get some work done

Assuming they both got the job done and done well, I would pick Fred...even though I cannot abide tardiness. But, if Fred's laid back attitude translated into poor performance I'd pick Daniel.

For any of my employees you better be on time. If you are late you are wasting my time, and my time is valuable.

Daniel. Being on time is a key factor IMO. It shows responsibility, attention to detail and planning. Being an asshole is something I can deal with.

Daniel. At least in my job, he would make the better fit for everyone to help us make more money and get bonuses

I choose Fred. As efficient as Daniel may be, his personality is toxic in the workplace.

That's a good point.
If customer contact were involved, probably everyone would choose Fred, but even if not, you can claim it's not good for the "atmosphere" at work.

I'd tend to Fred. It would depend on the job and the number of employees. The more cross functional the position, typically the more employees and a hire of Fred to maintain balance. In a start-up where leaders and self starters are desired, Daniel is my choice.

Daniel as long as he isn't downright crabby or hostile.
If he has the emotional life of a Star Trek Vulcan, he won't be and will get the job done better.
