I thought Republicans were supposed to be good Christians.

Still, turning the cheek as it is understood today (which isn't really asking to be hurt again; it's really just ignoring the insult) is a much better policy than eye for an eye.

I really like the phrase "eye for and eye makes the whole world blind."

08/08/11 1:20 pm

You know in the context of the time when Jesus said to turn the cheek, slapping someone with the back of the hand was a huge insult. Turning your cheek invites them to slap you with their palm, returning the insult to them. Turning the cheek was a statement saying "you will not disrespect me."

Revenge rocks? .......right. Of course, though, you're from Texas.

08/03/11 7:30 pm

An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind... But WHO CARES revenge ROCKS

08/02/11 8:31 am

An eye for an eye only affects one eye, you still have the other one.

08/02/11 8:28 am

Eye for an eye. Ancient civilizations lasted much longer than any western civilization. Maybe real justice is one reason why.

Ale it from where it comes most of the time you realize that it's not worth getting involved

An eye for an eye is the only way to practically teach people that killing some one is wrong and so is stealing and everything like that

I wish I could turn the other cheek but frankly I have a habit of revenge

07/30/11 3:58 pm

It's better just to turn the other cheek. Violence only brings more violence!

@Phaylyur - I can no longer laugh at that kind of behavior. I find it quite disturbing and bothersome. Sadly it's too common.

Ah, Hammurabi's Code is put to the test. This depends a bit on the situation, but often turning the other cheek is the better thing to do, just as discretion is often the better part of valor.

07/28/11 10:10 pm

there you go again, GOPers, say you're Christian and then immediately demonstrate that you don't understand the first thing your savior taught you. "vengeance is mine sayeth the lord." why do you want that which your lord has claimed exclusively for Himself?

07/28/11 5:43 pm

"An eye for an eye just makes the whole world blind"

I think there should be something in the middle here

Some of each. It's best to turn the other cheek once and then no more mr. nice guy...

07/27/11 11:10 pm

wait this wasn't talking about beer pong?

07/27/11 10:51 pm

wow, I find it hilarious how hypocritical even the first few comments are. The dogma you Christians cling to is immediately abandoned in your ridiculously self-righteous fury.

And if you got shot, you wouldn't like the idea of being told to suck it up.

Although I am Christian and LOVE God and Jesus, my view on it is if you get shot, shoot back. If your stuff is stolen steal it back. Casey Anthony should've been put in the electric chair. And if you abuse an animal then the same thing you did to them gets done to you. (starve a puppy get starved)

Ghandi once said, "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind". Revenge only leads to more, until no one is sure if they were "even" or not.

07/26/11 8:57 pm

It makes me sad that people are so vindictive.

07/26/11 4:07 pm

I stand, corrected: god should shoot all the sinners as a mild warning of the eternal fires of damnation that awaits them in hell (while also kickin some profits to arms manufacturers) . If they pray hard enough, then maybe Jesus will disinfect the wound so they can keep their leg.

I'm a Catholic, so ima go ahead and go with what Jesus said over Hummarabi. Lol

Honestly there is a time for both however the majority of the time you need to turn the other cheek.

07/26/11 2:23 pm

An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind

But if you're not a Christian, you could kill the bad Christian for being a hypocrit while at the same time forcing their beliefs on others.

@Eco: there are no "good Christians", everyone is a sinner. Everyone.

07/26/11 12:17 pm

@Eco killing someone would be considered a sin as well. everyone falls short of the glory of God and is a sinner. Sin has been a part of the human race since Adam and Eve in the garden. That's why God has given us grace through Christ. Check your facts before you post a comment please.

By his own statement, Eco would be shot by a Christian.

V What...? That sounds retarded.

07/26/11 11:19 am

If you are a sinner you should be shot by a good christian in the name of god. Simple, quick, easy.

07/26/11 9:37 am

@smtimberma all sins are counted equal in the eyes of God so just because you chose revenge doesn't mean you're a bad Christian it just means you're a sinner like every other person on the face of the planet. That's why God gives us grace.

07/26/11 9:07 am

a guy of superior social status would only slap an inferior one certain way. to turn your cheek forced him to slap you like an equal. it doesn't mean stand there and get the snot beat out of you, it means get the other guy to treat you like an equal.

07/26/11 9:05 am

one interpretation of turn the other cheek that came up in Sunday school once, was that to turn your cheek meant that whoever just slapped you would have to either use their other hand, or the back/front of the same hand. which was actually a way of bringing the guy down a notch.

this is not a legitimate choice. they are both true. God the father payed out e4e and Jesus said turn the other cheek. but the two thoughts are not contradictory.

smtimberman
07/26/11 6:49 am

Jesus said turn the other cheek. To say eye for an eye is to be a bad Christian.

07/26/11 5:47 am

Maybe not an eye right off the bat... but at least a toe, then a finger on 2nd offense, then an eye for the third. Then, if they still haven't learnt (or didn't see the cops coming, or couldn't run [because of the toe]), then fry 'em. We need someone to hang, and the prisons are getting too full.

It's a bit strange that the religious right disagrees with Jesus on this one.
