An 11 year old shot and killed a deer while out hunting with his Dad. He's received both praise and criticism. Is your reaction to an 11 year old hunting and killing a deer more positive/neutral or negative?

If his father is teaching him responsible gun skills and not boozing it up while hunting, I could give a fly's fart. I don't know how many times I have heard about some drunken idiot shooting and killing his friend because he thought he was a deer

Sounds like he is well on his way to being a responsible, productive member of society.

The father is teaching his son survival skills and gun safety (hopefully). I personally don't hunt but I do eat the meat.

I got my first and only deer at 12. Didn't go back for more because I didn't care for the sport. Why kill Deere if I'm not in to it?

All my children hunted and most got their deer by age 9, my youngest got hers at age 8, I am so proud of them all...

Wasn't the deer killed with a bow? Would think that would help his case. That's some good skill especially after the zombie apocalypse.

He's teaching his child that it's OK to kill an animal just because he feels like they don't count or he is superior.

Meat free, yes. Common misconception : vegans don't only eat just grass, leaves, and soy beans. Eliminating meat would lead to decreased suffering, fewer hungry people, a cleaner environment, and better health.

Factory farming causes more pollution than all the vehicles in America put together. The vegetation needed to feed one cow feeds way more people than the one cow does. Animals suffer deeply on factory farms, just as your pet dog or cat may.

aaronb50
10/28/14 6:11 am

Truly carnivorous animals NEED to eat meat to survive. We do not. Lions dot lock up zebras in factory farms and pay other lions to kill zebras for them either. So many cows exist because we breed them. No demand for meat=no artificial supply.

aaronb50
10/28/14 7:41 pm

It's not YOUR meat; it is the flesh of an animals of which you paid someone to kill. There is no right to kill.

I think it's too young. We don't have to kill to survive right now. I don't hunt, but I would wait until 13.

Positive. I killed my first at 9. Even better for him that it was a rate animal. What I consider hunters hunt for meat, the occasional trophy animal is just an added bonus.

Though the article I linked to here doesn't address it (because I was going for an unbiased poll question), I think the main reason it became newsworthy was because the kid and his dad have received death threats and the like.

Which is worse...raising a cow on a farm in torturous conditions, feeding them foods they don't normally eat and keeping them locked in tight pens so they can't move, then eventually slicing their throat and slaughtering them for food....or going

Axl752 NY
10/27/14 5:30 pm

But why is it ok to slaughter a cow in order to use its hide to make a nice stylish pair of shoes to accessorize yourself with, but not ok to go into the woods and kill a deer in order to feed your family?

DuckAndCower
10/27/14 9:54 pm

Axl, that's not a great argument, since the hides are a byproduct of the meat industry.

Although, Stiletto, unless you're getting your milk and eggs from a local, non-factory farm, there's about as much suffering and death involved.

StilettoMiss SF med law, meme queen
10/28/14 6:34 am

Almond milk :) and eggs are bad for your arteries so I usually avoid those too.

You'd be disappointed with how little I actually consume. It's mostly stuff like apples and bananas and cashews and raisins

Axl752 NY
10/28/14 7:55 am

Duck, whether leather is a byproduct of the meat industry or not that makes no difference. Somebody who owns leather products is just as responsible for killing animals as someone who eats meat.

Teach children to respect and operate guns at an early age and they would be less likely to "have an accident". Good for that parent teaching that child some survival skills.

Couldn't agree more, Yuke! I'd add that this is a legal activity, and the respect is not only being fostered for the weapon, but the animal as well: "Are you sure you can take the shot? If you're not 100 percent, we don't want to injure it."
