An 11 year old shot and killed a deer while out hunting with his Dad. He's received both praise and criticism. Is your reaction to an 11 year old hunting and killing a deer more positive/neutral or negative?

I see it as a positive. Hunting takes skill and patience. Not many 11 year olds have that kind of patience. :)

That's really cool. The youngster is spending quality time with the father and learning gun safety and respect for the weapon. There's also some meat showing up on the table and that's always a good thing.

Teach children to respect and operate guns at an early age and they would be less likely to "have an accident". Good for that parent teaching that child some survival skills.

Couldn't agree more, Yuke! I'd add that this is a legal activity, and the respect is not only being fostered for the weapon, but the animal as well: "Are you sure you can take the shot? If you're not 100 percent, we don't want to injure it."
Perfect!

I agree. The patience/skill that it took that 11yo to do that will lead to further developed positive qualities later in life

Good for him, and really good for the dad who is sharing the craft with him.

going out to the woods to kill something you don't need to is something I disagree with. Even if I wasn't a vegetarian.

...unless he received the death threats because people didn't like his hunting?!? People are insane...

It was an albino deer. It's lucky to have survived this long.

I'm not a hunter either. As long as the steak house has supply then I'm good.

I have no problem with it a song as the deer carcass is used productively.

I don't see why anyone would even take issue with this. Maybe some people don't think 11 year olds should handle crossbows or other weapons? I don't think it's a big deal.

Then better only eat nuts and berries, or you will be killing something.

I've been shooting since 4, hunting since 9. I think I'm a pretty well balanced human being.

LOL! What do you care what I own?

Is that how you justify walking into the woods and needlessly blasting away at something?

He's teaching his child that it's OK to kill an animal just because he feels like they don't count or he is superior.

My daughter is 7. As long as she makes some behavioral milestones, I will be taking he out with me next year... I was 6 on my first hunt.

He will grow to be a psychopath and kill hundreds before police will catch him. This child needs to be put down.

But why is it ok to slaughter a cow in order to use its hide to make a nice stylish pair of shoes to accessorize yourself with, but not ok to go into the woods and kill a deer in order to feed your family?

Meat free, yes. Common misconception : vegans don't only eat just grass, leaves, and soy beans. Eliminating meat would lead to decreased suffering, fewer hungry people, a cleaner environment, and better health.

Axl, that's not a great argument, since the hides are a byproduct of the meat industry.

Although, Stiletto, unless you're getting your milk and eggs from a local, non-factory farm, there's about as much suffering and death involved.

Positive. I killed my first at 9. Even better for him that it was a rate animal. What I consider hunters hunt for meat, the occasional trophy animal is just an added bonus.

How about going into the woods and killing something you are going to use? Feed a family with?

Which is worse...raising a cow on a farm in torturous conditions, feeding them foods they don't normally eat and keeping them locked in tight pens so they can't move, then eventually slicing their throat and slaughtering them for food....or going
