I am planning our itinerary for a vacation to Gatlinburg, TN. Aside from the usual touristy things, is there anything we just HAVE to go do?

If you like amusement rides go to Dolly World. So much fun.

1) The Ober Gatlinburg Aerial Tramway was fun/ interesting and offered cool views ($12 roundtrip). The wait to come back down took FOREVER though. 2) FREE whiskey/moonshine tasting @ Davy Crockett's & Ole Smoky. But overall, way too touristy for me!

Check out the natural beauty in the area. Pigeon Forge too. It beats the pants off of the tourist traps. And the tourist traps ain't bad to begin with. ;)

I have been told the incline is a fun thing to do, but I have never done that one, just the ones in Chattanooga & Stone Mtn., GA.

Incline...is that the long slide like thing that goes down the mountain? I totally want to do that!!

Kinda, it's a "trolley" (no clue what they call it), but you ride it down the mountain.

If you have time before your trip, I would go to myPigeonForge & request a travel planner & one from Gatlinburg, too. If Sevierville has one, request theirs.

If you don't have time for it to get to you, then be sure to go to one of the tourist information places & pick up those books. They usually have great coupons in them & often you can find an interesting attraction that you might not have otherwise.

You're gonna be eating at a pizza joint, a Longhorns, a Chop House, maybe a Red Lobster...You're not gonna find great cuisine here. This is East Tennessee lol.

Apple Barn is good, but I've only ate breakfast there. Honestly, unless you like Hatfield and Mccoy dinner shows, Ripley's Believe it or Not or ratty t-shirt stores, or Fairfields and Holiday Inns, Gatlinburg and that whole area isn't for you.

It is more commercial than it used to be, but there are still some fun attractions.

We have smallish kids, so we thought the lazy rivers, hiking and shows would be fun for them, and relaxing in a cabin would be good for us.

I guess that's good. It's just a mountain version of Myrtle Beach, if you've ever been there.

@Ryne, You don't know what you've got. East Tennessee is absolutely enchanting!

On vacation i like to just chill without an agenda. That area is really pretty. Id recommend a hike through the hills.

I'd recommend Dollywood. They also have cabins for rent too.

Yes! We went there and there was a guy with a "15-foot booger". That's pretty much all I remember of the whole trip.

Though it's not for rent, the Ogle cabin was interesting.

We have talked about Dollywood. Thanks for the suggestion!

Dollywood is always fun, especially if you enjoy music & shows or if you are a big Dolly Parton fan, like myself. :)

The aquarium! The tunnel under the water thing is amazing. You can see underneath the sharks :)

Omg I loved the sharkies!!!! This was the best aquarium I have ever been to.
You can almost touch the water if you are on the normal floor and not underneath the walkway.

The kids would love that, it would be so much fun!

The entire aquarium is awesome. There's a section where they can pick up living horseshoe crabs and there's a kid section too.
