Hypothetical: in 2018, China declares war upon the US. There is no draft but an urgent call for all people 18-60 to enlist. You would...
China has a surplus of men in that range (because of one child policy) and would have no problem at all drafting whoever the hell they want. They would absolutely crush the US with sheer numbers. Every American soldier would be dead or in prison getting tortured. I'd stay out if it, maybe move away.
I would already be serving. Or so I plan.
Thank you sir.
No worry the draft would be brought back!
You mean slavery?
I'm over 60 but I'd find some way to be useful.
I don't like living under the authority of The United States of America, but I have a feeling I would dislike living under the authority of the People's Republic of China even more. I don't want to live anywhere else either.
And I think we have a big chance of achieving maximum freedom in this land one day. That is worth fighting for.
The only way im enlisting is if China is invading, then id absolutely enlist.
That would not happen, at least for the foreseeable future. We are to economically dependent. Even if they did invade, with our civilian guns (we have 88 guns for every 100 men, women, and children) they would have a hard time taking us.
I would if I had too, but I highly doubt I would even be asked after giving 22 years.
Did you retire?
Your number is still on the rosters friend.
76% of Americans won't defend their country when attacked?
I start to feel uneasy.
76% are sick of the bullshît or don't think its worth defending.
It's not *my* country. It's a place I happen to have been born.
Holy shît violence said something I'd say!
No. I would rather not get involved in two governments deciding that the best way to solve their problems is to kill people. Disgusts the crap out of me.
I wouldn't even support the war - let alone enlist
It is assumed China started it, we are defending.
I don't care - I don't support war
It's red dawn style and you don't have a choice to support it because it's here in your backyard. Now what
There's already war in America in your backyard. That's the humorous part.
I don't care - not supporting war
This scenario has gotten totally crazy
I've done my tour. If there's an invasion on the homeland I'd likely join up with a militia or other group but not likely to re-enlist.
I'm not 18 but I'd find some other way to help
Oh, 2018. Oops. I'm pretty able physically, but I feel like I'd be more useful as a medic or as an engineer. But if I was truly needed in combat, I think I'd be in.
What a bunch of wimps. egg roll anyone?
If there was some kind of administrative work I could help with, sure. You wouldn't want to depend on me for your physical safety though.
Right there with you, icytoes! I panic and cry when I get near firearms and scary people, but I would be proud to help any other way that I can.
Yes I would, sore knees and all.
I would be of no help... I'd head down to Canada.
I enlisted after 9/11 and was badly injured in Basic. I couldn't re-enlist.
I'm exempt based on your age criteria. Maybe there's something else I can do to be of service.
Work in a munitions factory.
I was hoping there would be a need for someone to remove mouse brains from their skulls intact (one of my finer skills), but I guess your idea is far more practical.
My grandmother & her friends would "roll bandages" during WWII. I don't even
know what that meant. Should have asked her when I had a chance.
China would destroy the federal government economically before the first shot was fired. There's no need for an armed conflict.
By the crazy amount of money we owe them
Immediately by either replacing the dollar as the world reserve currency or by selling off its federal debt.
Long term by choking off trade with the states.
Americans don't accept that China owns their asses
China doesn't even own that much of our debt. We also own some of there debt.
The Chinese governments holds about 8%, perhaps a bit more by now of the US government's notes.
I think that's fairly significant.
I want specifics. Not, "They bought a ton of debt." What, specifically, would they do?
China owns a little over $1.5 trillion of the federal governmenr's debt. The treasury has to sell a little over $4 trillion each year.
The market distortion caused by a 40% supply increase would destroy the federal government almost overnight.
I can only hope
Anyone who doesn't should leave now
I'm sorry, but my morals would prevent me from ever participating in a war.
I'd enlist. I'm not sure id be accepted but I'd enlist
You'll have to excuse me if I'm not willing to risk my life for a country that hasn't done a single thing for me.
Skarface. The fact that you can insult this country proves it has done something for you.
@matt: what makes you think you wouldn't pass?
Flat feet. And due to the fact I have Duane's syndrome (it's so mild I don't even notice it) I can't turn my right eye to the right.
Yeah, because it's so rare to find a country that guarantees free speech these days.
Remember which country founded the idea of free speech
Who, Greece? I'll sign up for the Greek military, if it's that important to you.
The Greeks did not found freedom of speech look at Socrates
Rights are not given by the state.
In a time of war when there is such a call to enlist, the standards will be dropped and those who would be disqualified in peacetime for minor things would likely be able to get in in war if they applied.
First of all, nobody "founded" freedom of speech. Second of all, your entire argument is based around the idea that freedom of speech didn't exist until the founding of the US, which is totally false.
Even then I could still see myself ending up as 4F
No my argument is that this country was the first to think humans had rights. So before you say this country has done nothing for you. Your wrong
LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT!!!
Ridiculous. MJS, are you a vet already by chance?
I refer you to Athens once again.
No I'm not rebel. I am related to many Vietnam, Korea, and Iraq vets and skarface I see you did not look up Socrates
MJ, I think you're demand that everyone pick up a flag and a gun or "get the hell out" is a bit premature in that case.
No it's the im running away to another nation because this one has done nothing for me that gets me I actually respect Cole12s answer
What if someone disagreed with the war or this government? What if DC provoked it, as unfathomable as that might be?
You're right, I'm a pussy because I'm not willing to die fighting the Chinese.
Then they do what John Kerry did. He still fought for it, when he got back he made his voice heard and did something about it
See. "If you don't like it then leave" conservative.
Skarface you just lost this argument. I never called you a coward I called you unpatriotic and wrong. You step on a flag when you clearly don't know what that flag has done for you
I don't understand why they would have a call for enlistment in the first place. America's military is massive, and it could easily kick China's tits in without any new recruits.
How did I lose the argument? Also, there isn't a flag in the world that has done a single thing for me.
MJ, "the flag" doesn't represent what you think it does. It's imperialism and debt. It's authoritarian and police state thuggery. It's tax and control, divide and conquer.
The US is not some bastion of freedom anymore.
Patriotism is questioning and keeping the government in check not saying "how high?"
In the 1700's there were patriots and loyalists. The names haven't changed and neither have the attitudes.
That's why. Skarface learn history. If you would rather be ruled by a king or a dictator like Most nations prior to the US go ahead. Until you learn what this nation has done for you you can to argue here
It's china. They're massive have a growing navy and Air Force and try follow sun tzu to the letter
Rebel that's not his argument at all. His argument is that the US has never done anything at any point in any time to ever affect him. If your going to join in please read his argument
MJ, quit using the past as an argument. Focus on what's happening right now, in 2013. Are we the best nation on Earth? No. Are we the most successful nation on Earth? No. Are we the most free nation on Earth? Not by a long shot.
MJ, you've got so much growing up to do.
One ruler or many rulers the result is strikingly similar. The USA is the least smelly bowl of shît in some ways.
This is why we can't talk! It isn't a past argument. You say this nation has never done anything for you. You are wrong. Learn history and you will see what it did for you. But you'll say quit using that argument because I am right
I did read it and I happen to agree
Should I paste contact info for the nearest recruiter then?
@mattwall1 flat feet shouldn't be an issue unless it causes you to roll your ankle consistently. Duane's Syndrome… Meh. I don't know enough about it even after having read the Wikipedia article the other day to say.
Fück that noise, I'm going straight to Europe.
Given the umlaut, it will be Switzerland ;)
I'll be in Scotland
Ever spoken with a 22 yr old co ed from Edinburgh? Makes me flustered just thinking about it.
Canada, here I come.
Why would you abandon everyone you know and love in their time of need?
Canada would be a likely staging area for the Chinese military in the event of armed conflict.
Without second though.
They wouldn't be so strict then either on the requirements, blur the lines a bit.
Oh. 2018, I'd already be in. So I'd reenlist.
My country would actually need me. I would be a coward not to sign up. I would be 20 years old and more than ready to serve.
^^this^^ I love your reply and hope more of the young generation think like that.
Amen! I'll fight along side you
They're still allowing enlistments today boys.
It's not cowardice to have a mind.
Rally to the flag in a heartbeat :)
Do you mind if I share this?
Share it :)
