Would you donate your bone marrow to save the life of a stranger?
For those interested: bethematch.org
What kind of life they lead?
What a cold attitude. I hope you are not passing on your genes or anything to anyone walking this earth.
Yes, assuming its painless
I like dogs.
Nope, too painful. I don't think that makes me selfish... but whatever.
NiteOwl - great minds think alike :-)
Anonymously, no. Someone came and asked me, yes.
I would, but people with certain medical conditions can't donate. Can't donate blood either. Have a blood clotting disorder.
No spinal taps for me.
No. I heard its very painful. I don't do well with pain.
To those that said yes: you are aware if hiw very, incredibly painful the process is, right?
@preemiedoc, that's so nice!
Why wouldn't you???
Having matching bone marrow with someone is rare. It's not like blood type, where you're either A, B, AB, or O. There are only a handful of people in the world with the same kind of bone marrow as you. It would be selfish not to donate to save someone's life.
Zab- how painful is dying because you couldn't get a marrow transplant when you needed it? How selfish to say no when the only reason is because you're afraid of a little pain?
Then again, I've given birth 4 times. A needle in the back or hip is no big deal!!!
I registered to be a donor years ago.
@BrettRichards, no high horse here. Simply cannot believe fellow humans place the value of temporal pain over a human life. That indeed disgusts me, as it should you and every other human.
@goldy, it's a life at stake! The pain involved is like asking, would I suffer being beat beat up to rescue another human. Heaven help me, we ALL should reply yes. It's a life vs. personal discomfort.
World doesn't care for me so fuck everyone.. I wouldn't donate.. But if someone wants to buy my marrow then we can talk.. Besides everything is about money now anyways., not about being united as a human race..
I don't think I can since i have a neurological disorder..and medications
Robin- your body is continually creating more. If you donate, you're not going to miss it. And it will be replaced within a short time.
@IMO Donation doesn't work like that! Do a little research,
What the heck is wrong with Wyoming lol
If they asked, sure. Otherwise I wouldn't take the initiative myself, so voted no.
Nah, my strong marrow would rape the. With GVHD in no time flat. They'd just die a more painful death
There are certain disease processes and cancers that disallow individuals from donating anything (blood or tissue). I fall into one of those categories, so I regretfully chose NO.
Used to be listed as an organ donor too...
I imagine we would all hope someone would donate to us if we were in that position, so why not? My youngest brother did it and the patient lived. I am in the register, but have not been contacted yet
Zab - haha... women are usually able to deal with the pain.
After all, we give birth!
It would hurt like a motherfucker, but someone's life is worth my pain.
@dlinz001 no you make a good point. it's just something that I've gotten to know about myself over the years. when I was little I was very highly reactive to the smallest discomforts, such as my mom braiding my hair and pulling a little too hard.
The process is painful. However think of those who need it to survive and how much pain they must be in.
Back of my license reads organ donor- does that count?
No spinal tap involved. Usually all they do is give you an injection for a little while to increase your own marrow production. Then they take some blood from your arm for donation. It doesn't have to be very painful at all. Been on registry for 2 yrs.
I would because someone donated theirs to save my Dad. Pay it forward.
Wow. It's amazing how many people voted yes... I wonder how many of them ever attempted to find a match. Unless you give blood, the blood bank will most likely never contact you regarding bone marrow...
Yeah I would! Already did! Everyone should join the national bone marrow registry. The surgery was not bad at all and I got to save a life of a 13 year old girl.
I also had over active tactile sensation so in preschool I went frequently for occupational therapy. when I was 10 I had an endoscopy and even under the maximum amount of anesthesia, I apparently was still reacting during the procedure.
I can put up with shots and blood tests, but giving bone marrow is scary. the needle is way bigger and they stick it into your bone. I'd like to be able to do it someday, but right now it's something that I shy away from.
@tanner904 that's disgusting. why would you try to make other people feel like crap? that's judgemental and kind of ignorant. it's great that so many people are willing to donate, but you don't know other people's reasons for not doing so.
That stuff hurts but I'd do it.
Why the hell not?? My best friend died when he was 12 and I was 13 of bone marrow cancer I'm 33 now and will always remember him we were friends since kindergarten it was very painful to give then not now. Consider ur self a POS if u wouldn't give!!
Yes, doesn't mean I have to like it :|
I just learned 33% of people are complete jerks.
I've been in the registry since 1992. I got called once, but someone else was a better match.
It depends on the situation...
Everyone that said yes go sign up to be a registered donor, www.getswabbed.org
Depends on how old they are. If its a 99 year old man then no, I'm going to need it for longer. A 10 year old kid? Yes.
EarlyBird, I joined too! Yes, great minds. :)
