Inspired by the many polls on "Merry Christmas," "Happy Holidays," and so on: Assume somebody addresses you with a greeting that is not YOUR preferred greeting. Are you offended?
No. I'm not a Liberal.
I was asking about all variations. Some conservative Christians are offended by "Happy Holidays." So, that would be a yes, for them.
How do you feel about "Happy Holidays"?
Jesus is the reason for the season. "Happy Holidays" suggest that I turn away from the King. I won't deny Jesus.
Then, you should have answered the poll with a yes. You are offended, if somebody greets you with Happy Holidays.
I'm not offended. I just don't care and then correctly respond with Merry Christmas.
Ok, fair enough.
Why would someone greeting another person cause any kind of offense? Did we all of a sudden forget what the word greeting means?
I want to tell them off. I'm being nice and wishing you Happy Holidays /Merry Christmas, whatever. Don't be an asshole. Man, people make me grumpy
Fortunately, only 2% of people take offense. The problem is that 2% are very vocal. This gives the erroneous impression that there's a serious controversy.
Wish me a Merry Christmas. Wish me a Happy Hanukkah. Wish me a Happy Kwanzaa. Just don't wish me Seasons Greetings. I put down "offended," because when they don't say Merry Christmas, they usually say Seasons Greetings or Happy Holidays.
I'd love to be wished a Happy Hanukkah!
Okay, Happy Chanukah! 😃
But, you'd better hurry! There are only about 8 hours left.
I actually had a gentleman "correct" me today when I wished him happy holidays. I got quite the lecture, at the end he told me to repeat my greeting, correctly. Needles to say "Merry Christmas" is not what came out of my mouth. It was two words, but not those two.
The person I was with and I were both surprised that this is a real thing for anyone but social websites.
Only the media gets offended at something like that, not real people.
Why should I be offended. The person don't know what I might believe in.
Most one-sided poll ever. I dreamed of the day I would see a 99%-1% pole and it's finally here!
Heck no. I assume it's said with a good heart, whatever the greeting is.
I wish it was said with a good heart, but the seasons greetings usually comes in the store, where management has told them what to say.
I still wouldn't be offended. At least, I can't imagine that I would be, but as an atheist I have to try to put myself in a religious person's position. If I were a Christian (which is how I was raised) would I be *offended* because someone made a general holiday greeting rather than one that addressed *my* personal religious beliefs? I would sure as heck *hope* that something like that didn't offend me. How would a store employee know whether I, a stranger, was a Christian, a Jew, a Buddhist, or something else?
DO NOT CARE. But I do find it amusing that the same people who whine and moan about PC behavior get all butthurt when someone doesn't use their greeting of choice.
My feelings exactly!
This is why I was surprised by the poll results. A few weeks ago a poll with different wording had the anti "happy holidays" people in an uproar.
Simply respond the way you choose...let them be offended!
It's not the words... It's the sentiment behind the words so there's no need to feel offended. Getting upset at such a trivial thing just makes people seem petty.
Doesn't bother me. I don't see the big deal myself.
Someone told me Happy Hanukkah yesterday. I took no offense...and learned that there were 2 more days of Hanukkah remaining.
No, it's not a big deal to me. They're usually being sincere, so I'm not offended.
I don't anyone to conform to my preferences... about anything. Did you greet me cordially? We're good.
I couldnt care less whether someone greets me with happy holidays or merry xmas, to me they are both the same thing
No. In fact, I think it would be cool to have someone wish me a happy whatever-they-celebrate. I've had someone wish me a Happy Diwali before, and that just made my day.
What is that?
Hindu Festival of Lights. 😊
The simple word Happy should do it! No matter the ending word. It makes me happy.
Yes, excellent point!
No, unless this person is being obvious jerk about it!
I just realized my comment might be confusing. I meant, "yes" to what you said.
I understood. 😃
I'm not offended, but I say Merry Christmas to them.
I don't have a preferred greeting. So it wouldn't matter to me.
There's a lot of discussion on SOH, but I'm curious about who actually is offended.
I, for one, am not.
We sometimes will do separate holiday cards for Christmas and Hanukkah because we know exactly who gets what but when it comes to greetings, I'll greet if I know what one celebrates or return a greeting if I get a happy holidays. Why people get so bent out of shape is beyond me.
I don't get it, either.
Not at all. It's overall the season of giving so I'll take whatever is given and be thankful anyone cared enough to think of me!
