Inspired by @VeritasSOH and @chimama: Do you perceive Trump's presidential campaign as a "circus" or do you take it seriously?
He's working for Hillary.
As much as I want to believe it's a circus, the ape's got a lot of followers. Unfortunately, I have to take it seriously.
It's a circus that started turning into a fascist/white supremacist rally.
I take it seriously because he has a very big soapbox and lots of money. I think it would be foolish not to consider him a real candidate.
What do you think the Republicans should do to counter him? Is there a Republican candidate strong enough to beat him?
It seriously scares me that we may be faced with the choice of Hillary vs. Donald. I wouldn't want either of them as my President.
You know, I generally abhor Hitler comparisons. However, I keep thinking about the 1930s, when a lot of people thought Hitler was a clown, who would not be able to get any power.
I mentioned this thought to my son-in-law and he got angry. He said we should be more concerned about Obama. However, Obama is on his way out and Trump is (God forbid!) on his *possible* way in.
The trump:hitler comparisons have to stop.
There's no way to have an intelligent conversation when that's the starting point.
He's not hitler. He's nothing like hitler.
No modern American politician is like hitler.
I don't think he is likely to become a mass murderer, if that's what you mean. However, I see similarities in his use of demagoguery, button-pushing of people who feel downtrodden and lust for power.
In order for any hitler comparison to be valid, the person in question has to be capable of committing a holocaust.
What you just said about hitler's political style applies to just about every politician.
"In order for any hitler comparison to be valid, the person in question has to be capable of committing a holocaust."
"What you just said about hitler's political style applies to just about every politician."
In varying degrees. I think he takes it to an infinitely higher level.
Anyway, what do you think about my other questions? How can we fight him with a better Republican candidate? I REALLY don't want to be faced with the Clinton vs. Trump dilemma.
I thin his election will burn out on its own.
No non-incumbent politician who has ever led at this point has ever been able to sustain that lead through the finish.
I hope and pray that you are right!
I have come to take it very seriously. He is incredibly dangerous.
I take his candidacy seriously, I believe it would be unwise to dismiss it out of hand. He refuses to be ignored or to go away, and his rhetoric appeals to far too many people.
As serious as any other popular candidate.
Yep, the same as almost every other candidate.
...and almost every current politician.
On a neo-Nazi website the Stormtrooper they actually said "Heil Donald Trump" and called him "the ultimate savior" as well stated that Trump will... "Make America White Again." Anyone who has the support of the KKK and neo-nazis is playing with fire! These people are violent extremists with a history of intolerance and hate. Multiculturalism and tolerance are modern American values, not intolerance, hate, religious persecution, and race-separation.
Yes, that's really scary!
Fortunately Trump subscribes to none of those values you mention in your last sentence.
I'm not a trump supporter, but I think it's inappropriate to decide all of his followers are white supremacists just because some random white supremacist with a website said some crazy stuff.
Isn't that kind of generalization and stereotyping exactly the kind of thing that gets you worked up when conservatives do it?
I agree that it shouldn't be the sole reason for his popularity, but it should make you reflect if you realize that you support the same candidate as the KKK and the neo-nazis.
Well, Milk just said he doesn't support Trump.
I don't support trump.
But I would vote for him to keep Hillary out of office.
I would vote for him against Hillary also.
I'm not so sure. They're both arrogant creeps. But, I think Trump would be harder to control.
Ebola, are you a Trump supporter?
GMA, you wouldn't vote for Hillary, would you?
About 6 months ago, before Trump made so much momentum, I would not have considered it. I was all set to vote for whomever won the Republican nomination. Now, however, if it turns out to be Trump, I have a real dilemma. I just don't know.
I'm not a Trump supporter but I'm not afraid of him and I will vote for him if he gets the nomination.
Trump isn't going to accomplish anything in office except repealing obamacare.
The biggest concern I have is that, given the economic recession coming next year, it's very unlikely that whoever wins this election will win a second election, and their party won't win the election that precedes the economic rebound.
Hillary will do a lot of damage while she's in office, and I don't know if it's worth letting her win this once to guarantee no democrats will win an election for the following decade.
He is a serious candidate running a circus of a campaign.
It's that awful circus that secretly beats and abuses it's animals that will hopefully eventually be shut down
A little bit of both
Serious, at least in that he has significant, serious support. But I'm okay with continuing to treat it like a circus.
I'm afraid, if we keep treating it like a circus, he may just get elected. The man seriously frightens me, for the future of America. And I don't usually go in for that kind of hyperbole.
He frightens me too, but I think that's a difficult decision for those of us in opposition to make. Do you treat it seriously, because he does have significant support, or do you treat it like a joke because seriousness gives his positions a degree of validity- as though they should actually be up for discussion and debate?
He won't be elected. His electoral maps do not look good. Hell, he may even drive Texas into the blue.
A man with his ego and what he has already accomplished, why not try and add moat powerful man in the world to his resume
No arguement here, it's just not a surprise from her, it was seen coming, his not so much
I'm in the minority in the left, but I think his campaign is dangerous considering its popularity. It should be taken seriously and we should be loud against it. People don't like Hitler comparisons, but he won with only around 35%.
Hillary is better?
Than Trump? Absolutely.
Haha, that's funny. And it's exactly why trump is polling so high. If democrats actually put forth a real candidate the numbers would change.
I don't understand this irrational and absolute utter hatred of Hillary Clinton. She's not my favorite. She tends to be kinda sleazy. She is owned by Wall Street. But at least she isn't batshit crazy.
Doctor, you make some very good points there.
Do you really want a sleazy, pathological liar who is owned by Wall Street as president.
Not to mention power hungry...
Better a pathological liar than a xenophobe and a proto-fascist. It's a slippery slope.
How about neither? Liberals complain about trump but won't clean up their own house!
I'm all for that. Let's elect Sanders.
I do think it is a circus, but I take it seriously due to his consistent polling.
It should be taken seriously due to his popularity. Many like the fact that he's not a glib speaker but speaks his mind unfiltered. Probably has no speech writer either.
And it shows!
The kind of circus with the creepy clown that makes small children cry and wet themselves.
I think the 30% that support him are tired of the corruption and lies they see everyday in regular politicians. Here's a guys that's self funded and is proposing things that make sense to them. You have to remember to Trump supporters he's the antidote to Obamas go it alone approach.
I understand, I really do, but that's not the solution. It's a case of "the cure is worse than the disease."
Turning to Trump because you're concerned about corruption is like turning to Kevorkian because you're concerned about tainted vaccines.
Not if you believe you have incurable cancer like many of these supporters do believe. There's a large group, as you can see that honestly believe Obamas caused so much destruction on our country that it will take generations to repair it. The incivility towards each other in this country has never been higher, all driven by design I believe based on this presidents policies and actions.
After the last seven years we can't have another clown.
So let's all vote for Hillary instead!!
Let's not. I prefer we don't go to the circus this year.
Perhaps we should dissolve the presidency...
I've thought it was a circus all along, but because of his poll numbers, he must be taken seriously. I have a really hard time believing he'll end up with the nomination, though.
It's one of my greatest fears. I dread having to choose between Hillary and Trump.
I take all campaigns seriously.
Even Vermin Supreme?
Vermin is a nut. "A pony for every American"
Yes. He's someone I seriously won't vote for.
I take Vermin Supreme more seriously than some of these clowns. At least he's honest about the fact that he will promise us whatever we want and then not go through with any of it.
It is a circus and he is the lead clown.
Pennywise, is that you?
A circus but it's gone on too long and has too many fans. This needs to stop.
Hmmm ... well, serious enough to be sincerely frightened he might get elected.
