If you were an able bodied young man drafted for a ground operation in Iran, would you induct or refuse?

Even though I would refuse for this hypothetical, I still respect the principle you have here of unflinching service to the nation whenever any conflict arises

I’d like to identify as an able bodied young woman. Might as well throw in Hot too. I wouldn’t die for Trump though.

I'm already in, but the Iowa Guard is off-cycle for the next few years.

I did a year in Iraq. Iran would be very similar.

I wonder if that is true. I tend to think that Iran is a different animal than Iraq but I was never in the military so I realize I have no frame of reference.

Iran is triple the land area, triple the population, more mountainous, and more religiously and ethnically homogeneous than Iraq. Militarily speaking, it's a much tougher objective for a hypothetical ground invasion.

Our military can't do a sustained invasion plus occupation at our current troop numbers, even with a full call-up of the National Guard and reserves.

I served in the Texas National Guard (1962-1968). I’m almost 81 now and it’s someone else’s turn now.

I would probably do exactly what Donald Trump did when he was called to serve his country.

Fun story:

FATSHADOW has mentioned on here before that I was in the process of enlisting when I had the accident that resulted in my leg getting relocated. Took all my tests, had my contract drawn up, was holding off a couple months to take care of some shit. All this to say I lost my eligibility.

Flash forward to a couple weeks ago, they raise the enlistment age to 42.

For laughs I contacted the DOD, directed to some medical office to see if they’d give me a medical waiver for “running”. 🀣🀣🀣

This morning they actually answered back!!!! 🀣🀣🀣🀣

Obviously the answer was still “No”.

Told Mrs. Shadow I tried to enlist again, she thought it was an April Fools joke. Showed her the email……shes still pissed at me 🀣🀣🀣🀣

From The American Heritage Dictionary “1. To place ceremoniously or formally in an office or position; install: a service to induct the new president of the university.
2.
a. To admit as a member; receive.
b. To admit to military service: a draftee waiting to be inducted into the army.
c. To introduce, as to new experience or knowledge; initiate: She was inducted into the ways of the legal profession.”

my bad if I used the wrong tense or chose an awkward word, I’m not the best when it comes to that sort of stuff :)

Yeah, it’s incorrect word usage.

You can’t "induct yourself" into the service. The military/induction center inducts you. You can enlist, join, sign up, or enter.

so would refuse induction and accept induction be correct instead?

Yes, linguistically, you can either refuse or accept induction. Legally, refusal is a crime.

Thank you. Yes, there are things that technically violate the law but are divergent from morality. One example would be if your officer told you to leave your MRAP behind intact in Afghanistan. But we see how so many of them have ended up in Taliban hands. If you violated your officer’s command and destroyed the MRAP to prevent it from being hijacked by The Taliban, that would technically be against the UCMJ, but not really an act against morality. If someone wants to argue about why it’s wrong for someone to do something, I believe the morality aspect is just as important to include in the equation as the legal aspect. If someone wants to argue you should go to this fight because it is morally important as well, that would be a different proposition altogether, and one that would be stronger imo too (at least by default).

I wasn’t making any kind of moral statement or opining on anything. I was merely stating a fact, so you’d understand refusals is not an option without consequences. It’s not merely a flip of the coin on whether you accept, if you’re drafted. You don’t typically have a choice, not without facing legal consequences.

Yes :), I did mention they would have to jail me first. My boss is a jehovah’s witness (I am not) and he was born in 1959, he had a few older friends that sat in prison outside the town we live in (we live in Dallas and they were held in seagoville), because they refused the Vietnam draft.

Even if you weren’t drafted and you’re enlisted already. You have a choice, go to war or go to jail. There’s only one right answer

Refuse. You will have to put me in jail because I’m not killing for the Israelites. I don’t see this happening, but of course I have thought about it. At the end of the day I’m still an American so I would not actively work against the war effort, but I refuse to be a part of killing my Muslim brothers who I view as objectively in the right regarding this ongoing conflict. This is not blind sympathy for faith though. I 100% support the US regarding its entry into Afghanistan in 2001.
