Hallmark is selling a festive holiday sweater decorated with the words "Don we now our fun apparel". Is replacing the word "gay" (the original carol lyric) with the word "fun" a good call given modern definitions, or is it too politically correct?

That's a copyright infringement. You can't alter someone's lyrics without a license.

They could have made it into a gay rights thing. The saw the opportunity and and they didn't take it. Shame.

I honestly wonder what kind of focus group they pitched this to. It makes the word gay seem evil by not using it.

It's not even that it's too PC. It's just silly. Gay=happy/fun.

They prob changed it to increase sales. How many straight guys would ever buy it these days if it said "gay" on it? Had nothing to do with being PC, it's exactly the opposite.

I say good call now because this world is full of idiots so anyone wearing it would hear an endless line of "your gay" jokes. so saying fun makes the chances of that drop slightly. I'll pass on wearing anything Christmas related though thanks.

I'm torn, because I understand that people might misunderstand based on modern usage, but I don't like them changing the wording of a traditional carol. Maybe they should have found a different carol for the sweater.

I don't agree with this and I am gay... Most simply said- this is stupid! Plus gay means happy not fun, so if it's going to be replaced by anything at least use the actual meaning.

There was a big city that replaced the yellow line on a bus with blue line because Asians deemed it racist. Ppl abuse the power of calling something racist. This is there way of changing something by attacking an individual, product, or company.

They look for anything small that's just slightly sketchy and start spamming it by labeling racist.

Nah I'm just letting ppl know innocent words that sound bad. A CEO said his company was acting niggardly in a meeting and it had to change. He got fired for saying that. Later he was rehired once the company realized it was an innocent word.

Attikia, I had no idea what that word meant. General made a good point. I don't think he was trying to be clever or funny, or whatever you think he was trying to do.

I think you misunderstanding his point further strenghtened it.

GeneralDevin MN
11/03/13 11:37 pm

Exactly. If you are offended by those words even though I told you what it really means I'm sorry. I'm not encouraging anyone to say those words in public especially not to a selfish black person. It's just food for thought.

Honestly I don't think it has much to do with PC and has more to do with the fact a majority of people wouldn't wear the shirt with that on it. So it's not trying to protect gay people, theyre simply trying to sell more sweatshirts.

Also, on another point I didn't even think of but makes a lot of sense, who's going to wear a sweater that says "gay" on it? It's better for business to change the wording. And Walmart or Target or whatever it was is a business.

usernamehere Raise a little hell
