WEEKEND OFF the serious Dr Stuff. What is your favorite comfort food? No one believes celery sticks. Fess Up
cheese lovers pizza with extra cheese on stuffed crust.
A gooey grilled cheese sandwich.
Butter all sides. Cheese on the middle. Fry til golden brown. Toss in a slice of tomato to make it look healthy or a couple dill pickles to take to Sodium Level even higher.
Dark shock late with orange and almond bits by Lindt, soooooo amazing!
Like 80% pure cacao
Fruit, cherries to be exact. I'll eat a whole bag in one sitting...and won't share. I don't do the melons though. Eww =\
Did I see that on Witches of Eastwick?
Doritos!!! I can kill a whole bag!
But certainly NOT on the Sabbat
Salted cashews, potato chips, club crackers with asiago cheese, potatoes cooked ANY way (fried, baked, roasted, whatever)
I am increasing my shares in the salt mines Mon
Take 5, the best of both worlds.
No reason to be selective or discriminate.
Honey crisp apples with peanut butter
Thin wedges topped w fresh ground nutmeg. The whole kitchen smells good.
Chicken Fried Steak with mashed potatoes and white sausage gravy
Hopefully for Bkfst
I know - not good for me at all - but with my gastric surgery I eat like 3 bites of steak and two bites if potatoes and gravey
And I only have it every once in a while
Anytime is the right time for CFS
Warm tapioca pudding.
Large tapioca ... Fish eyes... Made with my fresh ranch egg whites so light it floats around the room like soap bubbles.
So hard to choose. Top 3 are S.O.S., homemade split pea soup or homemade scalloped potatoes n ham. Nothing better than one of those on a cold evening to warm you up and fill your belly!
Can't forget the wife's green chili, abondigas and meatloaf.
Scalloped potatoes are a close second
I cooked 12 cup Dr pea soup special. I add a pinch of smoke flavor then dash it up w Crystal Pepper Sauce.
Unfair question. I like neither.
What do you like?
Home made vegetable soup!!!
Or chicken sausage gumbo...maybe I'll make some today!
Please add portobello's and fresh cilantro. What time is dinner.
Whatever time you get here!
M & M's,
Blue? I hated that phase.
Home made apple pie or home made berry cobbler... We also make home made ice-cream to go with them. My wife makes these at the holidays, so I don't have too much longer to wait!
You must demand Double Crumb topping. It is the reason cobbler exists.
Sweets but. Scalloped potatoes comes to mind. Starchy and sweet are both carbs so have the same uptake in the brain.
That was my fathers fav. Lightly buttered amidst generous cheese.
lefsa with cream cheese and raspberries
Do you arrange the berries neatly on top cheese, all plated perfectly on a complimentary colored bowl
Mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, buttery breads.
I know! Yum lol
Cheesecake. Like, any kind. Strawberry, blueberry, cherry, French silk, I really don't care what kind. I can eat a whole tray of it with no shame. That's just how much I love it. :)
Smooth and Kool
Mac and cheese made with gruyere cheese, lots of butter and panko bread crumbs. And to think i slept when all of this was going on!
Add that to my recipe please.
Mashed potatoes, or soft boiled eggs
I am from Maine. Taters for every meal for my first 21 years
They are always a comfort food. And I like soft boiled eggs when I feel under the weather. Where in Maine were you from, Doc? We love Boothbay Harbor.
Born in Aroostook county( N Maine) and ran a medical practice a few miles from Boothbay. Loved it
My husband's spaghetti.
Sautéed green peppers. Onions. Fresh tomato reduction with garlic and TripVirgin Olive Oil
Pretzels and coke
While riding or at home??
Chicken gizzards. Not sure that really fits in either category.
Chicken Gizzards unless eaten raw or steamed YICK YUCK are certain to have lots of fat and usually plenty of salt
Are you serious!!! Tell me about the FEAR FACTOR
They are good. I live in Mississippi and Georgia for a while I guess that southern food grew on me.
Oranges and hazelnuts
Big Chief makes great choices.
Greek yogurt, honey, walnuts or almonds (raw), sometimes with granola or grape nut cereal. It's the only thing I eat nearly every day.
Mac and cheese -- I want some of that Rob's recipe below. And mashed potatoes. Not together. I should not have read this poll at 2:45 am. Now I want some pasta.
That was MY recipe. I am older than Rob
I think there should be a Mac and cheese throw down between you two. Dibs on judging.
Not a fan of celery (it's the strings), but I really could OD on bell peppers. My comfort foods are bell peppers, apples, and grapes... Sorry doctalk, it's true! Occasionally, I would consider stuffing/dressing a comfort food, but not often.
Ahhh.... Glad some have refined tastes. I have been or am a recovered SugarHolic. No meal was complete in my youth w/o deserts. Veggie n Fruit munchies are NOW my Fav as well. But... If I did not know better... Home made Butterscotch pie.
I just don't LIKE sweetened things or rich/super-savory things. I feel sick if I eat much 'junk.' Had two pieces of Halloween candy (chocolate) tonight and feel awful!
Mac & Cheese
Just be sure it is real Vermont Cheddar, whipped with butter and cream to make it "lighter" then top w buttered bread crumbs toasted to a golden crisp.
Did you steal my recipe book?!
When it comes to good living and BAD food, I am
N the know
Popcorn with plenty of butter and salt.
Uncle John's Sat night tradition. He used an old fashioned kettle popper with a broken handle on top that stirred the corn. He had to twirl the handle stub with one finger! Then Mixed with his own farm fresh butter. Nothing better!
I own the VEGAN cheesecake of all time. 1/2 the calories and all the flavor!
I had gluten free pumpkin goat cheese cheesecake today!!! It was HEAVENLY!!!
I'm a salty, crunchy girl. :)
I also enjoy the sweet & salty combo.
I don't have one favorite. I tend to get on kicks & I'm not really on one right now, but I'm going to go with a candy that I make at this time of year. It's sweet & salty crack.
G Ma makes Divinity Fudge and Crazy Pudding. She is 99.9 and still cooking!
I make divinity for my Dad. What is crazy pudding?
That is so cool! My grandfather is 90 & still lives on his own & plants a garden every year. He has requested chicken & dumplings for Thanksgiving.
I know you said that you wouldn't believe us, but I HONESTLY do LOVE making & eating kale chips at home.
Salt free or Salted? There is your evil.
Crazy Pudding. I will need permission to release the recipe. It has dates and sugar concoction that you pour over a sweet dough before baking.
Salted kale chips...I usually use garlic salt & olive oil, but I sometimes use other flavorings. I have even seen where someone made them in a dehydrator & I am considering trying it just to see.
No worries about the crazy pudding, but it sounds like it is a more traditional English baked pudding, correct? If so, my family wouldn't touch it, but thanks anyway.
Doc, just out of curiosity, are you a GP or specialist? Integrative medicine, thoughts, too?
Emergency Medicine, Air Rescue Service
Will comment later on your question. Medicine has so much room to mature.
Chili, or stew.
Chili is yummy on cold day!
I've been making it every weekend for the past 3 weeks. :-)
Chocolate chips cookies.
Better add walnuts
Bah humbug! I like my cookies with big chic chunks only, nuts to you!
Deep fried double stuff Oreos. So I guess that's both?
Does Oreo know you can do that !!
Lol! I'm sure they do. Fairgrounds and the like have them quite often. I use pancake batter slightly thicker then usual. They come out better in a deep fryer, but you can do it on your stove as well. :D
Chicken and dumplings. Roast beef with corn, mashed potatoes, gravy and rolls. Rice and chicken soup. YUM!
That is NOT a CA favorite. Where did you get that combo?
It's not my favorite comfort food, but I'm feeding my family once a week...soyrizo. Seriously, awesome stuff.
I like it with chopped vegis, such as onion, zucchini, carrot, peppers, and black beans. Sauté them and slap it in a corn tortilla.
WTF is that?
What is soyrizo? Soy & rice or something?
I'm sure it's at you grocery store...if you look.
OK, I caved in & googled. Looks good. I'm guessing my vegetarian daughter would like it, too. Can't remember if I've seen it at the "natural foods" store down the street... I just perused the fake meat section a few days ago but may have missed it.
I caved & googled, too. I'm not into soy substitutes in general, but I bet this would be better than most. I noticed there are several brands & some were even gluten free, but I think I'll stick with the fresh chorizo I buy at Earth Fare.
Not a fan of sweets. At all.
That being said, I eat A LOT of everything else.
I get a sick satisfaction out-eating the morbidly obese people at home Town buffet while looking like I do. I'm evil, I know it.
You do have that dark side...
Btw, I do not recommend ever going to a home town buffet.
Unless you can eat 4,000 calories per day and crap out 2,000 of those and remain unaffected.
Do you want to see pictures. I once believed it to be my obligation to consume twice the value of food paid at the register at Home Town
Had to put my recumbent through a 20 mile sprint to repair the coronaries.
Not sure if this discussion is making me feel hungry, sick, or both.
My offer for dinner when you're in SD stands Tony....home town buffet. Whatever you want buddy!
Jeez Doc, that's heavy!
Nuthin but the best!
Food for fun! Food for life! Mix it up and enjoy the Zest and the Best of everything, once in a while!
Salsa and sour cream with tortilla chips OR a bar of Hazelnut chocolate. I wouldn't turn down ice cream either...
Illinois... Salsa. ... No so sure. SoCali mex salsa from Maria's over a Garbage Burrito.. Oh the preVegan memories.
I've always had salsa from the grocery store, so my expectations are low:)
Doc, about the other day. You posted a comment in an evolution poll that was very cryptic and I misinterpreted it, plus, it was a heated poll. As a result, my comment was off the mark. So, I'm sorry about that.
My friend... It was heated. And I should have be less stimulating in my prodding. I appreciate your sincerity!!
Plus it would be no fun at all if our SOH Personalities were mid line mediocre. I deserved a trouncing for setting up an argument.
Smoked almonds, yum!!! Add fruits, hot wings, or sushi please and thank you :)
That is a remarkable combo!
European licorice for dessert and I'd call that the best day ever! :D
(Tummy ache to follow)
The more chocolate the better.
There is only one level of chocolate. Dark
I love dark chocolate! Yes! :D
Yes but it has to be German, Belgian or Swiss. American chocolate is inferior.
Mint gelato. Good stuff.
I hope you are getting real Gellato. Had to find here in SoCal
There is a great place at Fashion Island in NB.
That would be VERY Dark Chocolate for me.
Cherry Garcia. JITB tacos a close second.
Fill me in and full me up on a cherry what?
It's a flavor of Ben and Jerry's ice cream made with chunks of dark chocolate and cherries. It's so amazingly good I only have it on special occasions or when I really need cheering up.
Mac and cheese
Add Hebrew National Devil Dogs.
I think if I had to pick one, forever for all times, it'd be ice cream. Häagen Daas, chocolate peanut butter.
Who said pick one. Celebration. Creativity. Exceptional eating. Revel in the stuff then back to better basics.
