Scenario: The first teleportation deviice is ready for a human volunteer after animal experiments went well. Applicant is chosen from a list. You'd get Neil Armstrong-like pioneer fame. They explain the possible risks (see comments) . You would

Both the old movie and the one starring Jeff Goldblum.
That's why I said the rooms/pods are clean this time.

Sure. Just give me a good life insurance policy for my family in case I vaporize.

I'm having one of those depressed evenings. I don't give a fuck, teleport me halfway into a rock. At least my name would get in the history books.

I'm sorry and hope things will look up soon.

NOPE. I'm imaging something like the Tesla teleporter from the Prestige. I bet it's just a new me and since it breaks me apart first, the old me dies. Even if it works no one would ever know that you die every time you teleport.

Testroom alpha to Testroom beta, about 10 yards. This is a first experiment, not a trip ;)

Problem is, you can only go to explored places since someone has to put up the receiving station at your target first ;) It's for fast transportation not exploration.

I already feel this concept is iffy at best but more likely than a Star Trek transporter which ALSO wasn't used to jump into the complete Unknown, just onto a nearby planet that has been scanned.

If I could beam you onto a habitable planet that isn't explored but detected (far advanced tech to assure enough accuracy you rematerialize on the ground with pinpoint accuracy) then you'd be on your own. With all the relative movements...

11/01/13 8:49 pm

...there is no way to locate you again ever and bring you back. You'd be marooned but could "beam" your findings back, provided your transmitter works with the same principle. I hope there'll be nothing out there to eat you ;)

Aww. I was hoping to use it, kill Caligula, become emperor, and invade Britain

It's not a time machine, but given your smarts it dawns on me you're yanking my chain ;)

Dang. You guessed. Send me to Vulcan please

I also yanked ;) If tech is available to send you to a faraway planet with pinpoint accuracy, given all relative movements, the same tech would be able to bring you back. We're not ready yet to send you to the Vulcan academy but you might qualify :)

That's unfortunately logical sir

I'd take the risk, I've always wanted to be a pioneer.

They say aside from a glitch which is always possible that if there is a soul, they have no idea if it's coming along. Also, you have to be conscious and they don't know if you feel anything or if it takes subjectively a horribly long time.

They guarantee something like in the movie "the fly" won't happen, both chambers are sterile and screened.
Inspired by a Stephen King short story where it subjectively took a near eternity and the traveler lost his mind.

In the movies, if there is a glitch, you'd come out scrambled with your right hand protruding from your forehead, your left eye winking from your bellybutton and your mouth silently screaming out of your chest ;)
