Do you live in a town where you could run into a store for five minutes, leave your car running, and not worry about it being stolen?

Probably, but no one would.

This is an affluent town surrounded by a few towns that do not share our economic stability. Camden NJ is also a very short trip down the highway to us. Feel free to google that warzone if you arent familiar with it.

We are a low crime area, but 95% of the crime in this town are outsiders coming in to steal. Generally, “diverse youths” or meth addicts. The other 5% is usually HS kids possessing drugs while doing dumb shit in their vehicles, and drunk Italians hitting their wives.

I used to live in a town where my car wasn't safe in an underground garage withing a gated coproperty, with common and individual garage doors (for a total of 3 barriers).

Imagine my surprise an, frankly, delight, when I immigrated to Boston Metrowest, and realized most peop’e would not bother locking their cars and houses doors.

Don't do it.

I've taken sooooo many stolen vehicle reports from this exact situation. I don't care if it's 5am and -30*F - someone WILL disappear your car sooner or later. Shut your s*** off and lock it up.

Actives, Alpes Maritimes, 1989. I am taking a morning walk to the sea shore. Some guy in his 30's arrives on my drzam bike at the time, a brand new BMW R100 GS Paris Dakar, kicks its stand down, and without even removing his helmet, heads to one of those tobacco newspaper kiosks on the wide sidewalk, maybe 10 meters away. Looking at the bike from a short distance, I notice the keys are still. Before can even formulate the thought in my mind: "must be a tourist; what an idiot!", some teen jumps on the bike, takes it off stand, starts it and puts it in gear in one movement, and disappears with it!

I do sometimes leave my car running but I lock the doors. I’m not sure if my big headed baby girl would welcome a car thief or not and I’m not willing to risk it.

Come to think of it, I often see other people leave their car running and unlocked often at a convenience store. Probably has more to do with Texas heat than anything else. I do hate getting my car cooled off and having to get out for five minutes and it’s 150 degrees inside again.

This is why we love remote start on our car! Both in the summer and in the winter!

It might depend on whether I’m driving the stick or automatic transmission.

You know I used to do that back in the day. I just wouldn’t do it now, but not because of increased risk. I think the risk has stayed the same. It’s me that has changed.

Why would you burn gas just because you are too lazy to park?
