You need to type “≠” but don’t know how, so you ask AI. A. She gives a 20-line tutorial by device B. She just says “Here, copy mine ≠.” Choose A or B.

I don’t use or trust AI. If it is artificial it is not real! 🤷‍♀️

How would I ask it if I don’t know how to make it?

This is what it said: “You can type the "not equal to" symbol (≠) using a keyboard shortcut, by inserting it from a character map, or by copying and pasting. For a quick method on most systems, use the Alt + 8800 shortcut on Windows or Option + = on a Mac.”

iPad here. But thank you

On iPad, click on the numbers key to choose the numeric keyboard, then press and hold the = key. Both ≠ and ≈ are located there.

That fabulous. Thank you, seriously!

Simple: Type “Alt + = “ on a Mac

Sorry, meant: “Option + = “

I would generally search on google "not equal to sign" and copy-paste

I love the question. Its a trolley problem for tech support. And it makes me nostalgic for the carnage of a typical trolley question.

I’d use the alternate symbol for not equal, which everyone knows is “<>”. It’ll that weren’t acceptable, then I’d want to know how to do it for the future, so I’d follow the process, which I’m sure is exaggerated by the AI, and really only is 2-3 steps.

Pam … as expected, you exaggerated the situation.

Here’s what Perplexity suggested …

1. Unicode shortcut: Hold Alt and type 8800 on the numeric keypad, then release Alt (\neq).

Or

1. Copy and paste from here: \neq or ≠

I’ve never seen <> used for not equals, I would’ve used !=

If I will never need it again B, if I will need to do it often A.

This...though I have a keyboard app that let's me save weird frequently used things, so if you I expect to use it often, I will copy it & put it there.

If I expect to need it only this one time and am in a hurry, B. Otherwise A.

Why would I ever have to use that symbol?

Because you want to show, in a mathematical ‘sentence’ that something is not equal to something else. Like 14 ≠ 12

Thank you.

I would just use words. Much easier to understand.

Nov 07, 10:02 am

Pam … 14 <> 12 is absolutely acceptable.

Nov 07, 10:07 am

I just don’t understand.

It’s been a long time since I’ve had to take a math test, but I’ve never seen that symbol.

How would it work in an actual math equation?

Until you are fighting character limits on show of hands answers, and besides, it’s ‘normal’ to me. I would never use <> instead of one symbol. I’m a bit confused by the comment.

Nov 07, 12:16 pm

Cowboy. How about x + 3 ≠ 10 ……. Answer 7?

cowboy Evil will not prevail
Nov 07, 12:28 pm

So it replaces the equal sign?

When did that change?

Pam … you could try to be more wrong, but I’m not sure you’re up for it.

Math is clearly not your calling.

Nov 07, 1:51 pm

Clearly I messed that up. Cowboy how about Truth + Faith ≠ Proof. And the answer to my poorly chosen answer was any number except 7.

Nov 07, 1:57 pm

7+3 doesn’t equal 10? Must be some common core math.

Sorry. I’m just not getting it.

PamGH SW Washington
Nov 07, 2:02 pm

Yes, 7+3=10. The question is asking “what number (x) plus (+) seven (7) does not equal (≠) ten (10). The answer is a set of any number you can think of EXCEPT 7. I made an error when I identified the answer as 7. I’m sorry if that made things more difficult.

No worries.

This just confirms that I have no reason to use this symbol.

This is a good example on how to properly use AI. You can use it as a way to learn. Or you can use it as a crutch.

Give a man a fish feed him for a day, teach a man to fish feed him for a lifetime.

Pam … fine. Who could expect anything less from you? It’s a hoot that you whine about hyperbole when that’s all you bring to the discussion.

You never produce any evidence to support your ridiculous positions and often run away when your lies are exposed.

As a leftist, you demand to never be held accountable for your nonsensical and destructive positions.

Being called a troll by you is a compliment! Thank you.
