In a rather disturbing rape scandal involving Vanderbilt University football players, the city of Nashville has denied requests by news media for the police records involving the case (link included.) Pick a side
If it's an ongoing investigation, then this is standard procedure.
Right, would not want it to be like the Duke Lacrosse scandal. They were completely cleared eventually and the girl admitted she lied, yet those boys were mistreated by the media.
City. If the case hadn't gone to court yet, then releasing info to the media could poison the jury pool. Screw the media.
I can see how internal police records in an open investigation should be withheld from the media until the case has gone to court. Once in the courts, every fact entered at trial should be made public except as necessary to protect the victim.
They should kill the scumbags who raped the poor girl!
Maybe they should go to trial first?
After the trail take them out back and make them pay.
It's sad that this happens much more frequently than many people realize. Private universities often cover-up incidents like this; sweep them under the rug, so to say.
Yale literally punished one rapist with an essay...and they never say rape, insist on calling it nonconsensual sex. It's shameful.
Quite so. It's incredible what private security personnel advise many of their students who are affected in these scenarios.
They do. They also don't notify victims when their rapist is coming back to campus. It's sick but finally being talked about, that's the first step.
Are there convictions yet?
Not quite that simple...Read the link when you have time. The primary aggressors have been charged, but there's at least one accomplice who's already plead. The whole thing is pretty tough to stomach.
That's just sick. It's already outside the norm that these guys are going to court and that they acknowledged evidence had been tampered with. Often rape kits are simply ignored. I'm glad people are starting to care about these issues.
It's an ongoing investigation so I would side with the investigators.
Until the case has gone to court I would side with the city. There might be some innocent people whose life will basically be ruined. And the victims might not want their names out there either.
Please like the link to keep it at the top. Thanks :)
