It was a year ago tomorrow Tuesday (Oct 29) Sandy hit the Jersey shore. I spent the night in my closet with my cat and body pillow & woke up to a war zone with trees, power lines down and roofs blown off. 10 days no power- Have you survived a storm?

Several hurricanes starting with Hazel when I was less than 2 years old. It's one of my earliest memories.

Ice storm of '07. 12 days w/o power and freezing temps. Trees literally exploding everywhere from the weight of the ice as they shattered.

Not a hurricane, but several winter storms, including one in the late 90's that left us without power for 38 days.

Ice Storm in the early 90's lost power for a couple days, and I had to stay with my dad till it came back

Yes - every winter we tend to get a large snow storm - 5 feet or more - we get through it just fine

Isabel, nor'easter of '09, Irene, other various tropical storms. Nothing major. Isabel was our largest storm surge I think. Flooded one of our tunnels because of a failed flood gate.

Is it true the state continued charging property taxes for uninhabitable houses and apartments?

I understand the concept of a property tax, but that's downright abominable a year afterward.

Several. Hurricanes Alicia, Wilma (at sea), and Ike. Tropical storm Allison which was more devastating to research tan we'll ever know as it flooded the entire Medical Center and had me working temporarily until I found a new position.

Hurricane electricity for 12 days.

10/28/13 12:39 pm

I survived the Derecho in summer 2012. I was driving during the storm. Broke my windshield and I was relatively surprised when my car wasn't picked up and flung across the interstate.

I haven't been in a storm but this a stupid poll. If i didn't survive how would I be alive?

I was in Mississippi during a hurricane. It didn't do extreme damage... but it took down a few trees and power lines.

Super Typhoon Karen, 1962, from the precarious heights of Nimitz Hill, among hardest hit areas. Very small island though. Horrendous every where. Most measuring instruments destroyed before eye @ 145-155 mph velocity. No power past Thanksgiving Day.

Came through Nov 11. Before/after photos - & actual experience - overwhelming. Basically flattened 90% of structures. Completely defoliated entire tropical island. Water damage extensive.

Ice storm of 2008.
Power was out for 8 days and all the branches were downed.

It sounds awful. We have had electricity out for 2-3 days and that seemed too too much.

Sandy was terrible all my neighbors had water but we got saved. No power for 18 days though and I had to take a shower by boiling big pots of water and hoped it didn't cool too fast or didn't burn you.

I live in Missouri. We get Tornados, snow storms, thunder storms, and since we are on a fault line in St. Louis earthquakes are in our future.

I get tornados and ice storms in my part of the country. My worst was an ice storm in 2002 when i was 17. January ice storm left 3-6 inches of ice. No power for a week. I was making Molotov cocktails just to heat up cans of soup and "grilled" cheese

I've had several similar ice storms in Oklahoma. Trees and power line poles get so weighted down with ice they snap under the weight. No electricity and there was definitely no way to drive

A few. Hurricanes down here. Twice I went over a week without power. But the damage outside was minimal and I fortunately had no major damage to the home. The power being out was the worst. The whole city smelled like a sewer.

It was so horrible to be cold and without power. Lining up for gas. I started feeling like a homeless person. One year later and the folks in Breezy Point and Staten Island are still homeless. Awful times.

Couldn't buy food - couldn't drive. We would go to the hospital to warm up and charge our phones. Id cook dreary dinner at 3 PM while it was still light out and nights were spent listening to a radio. Couldn't warm up. Then we got a big snow storm.
