Gone for the highest voted number.
This equation was written poorly intentionally, to stimulate discussion. Using math to solve a problem IRL (recipe, carpentry, finances), one probably wouldnt write it like this. And there would be signs (each, $, hours, %, feet, etc) that would provide context for a sanity check of the equation.
Susan would be right if her answer was 1.
Haha! Yes, pulling your chain and trying to stir stuff up! Haha!
Oh, sorry! Our comments (my reply to you below) crossed paths. =:-)
ZANDER - Nope, it's 9. STANDARD order of operations say parentheses, exponents, then multiplication AND division, left to right, whatever order they appear in. Google "order of operations" and check some legitimate math sites and you'll find that this is what they say.
I would like to be the first to admit, I was wrong. It is 9 because when multiplication and division are next to each other you work from left to right no matter which is first. In this case division is first so it's 6/2(3) 6/2=3 and 3(3)= 9
ORDER OF OPERATIONS! Parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction IT'S 1!
I can see 9
The same thing but
Ok I see...
LOLOLOL how is it NOT 1?!?!!
*(really, someone please explain)????
No need for insults!
The purpose of this app is ONLY for...
Laughing as hard as u at the people who can't figure this out ????
Susanr is right. PEMDAS clearly states that 9 is the correct answer. If you get 1, then you are doing it wrong. Believe me, just search up PEMDAS on your browser and you will find the correct way to solve a BASIC ALGEBRA PROBLEM.
@susanr is my favorite math wizard!
I so agree. Looks like California taught us well
If moron means, smarter than you, then yes. If 6th grade you mean a Masters Degree in Business Management, then yep.
Obama math as Clinton states is simple ARITHMETIC. Obviously the House control GPP all need to go back to math class!'
Please take a Google trip to a few math web sites. Search by "order of operations." You will learn that *standard* PEMDAS includes the stipulation that when you get to the multiplication AND division part, you do them LEFT-TO-RIGHT, regardless of which order they appear in. (Same for A & S.) So: 9.
Go look up P.E.M.D.A.S. On google, since you clearly missed it in sixth grade.
You are a moron. Go back to the sixth grade.
WOW. Really people????
P.E.M.D.A.S....anyone remember this from basic algebra AT ALL? we are absolutely screwed if 75% of the population is truly that uneducated/uninvolved/absent-minded, or just plain stupid to get that one right. that is horrifying and pathetic.
Are you just pulling my chain?
Standard rules of operation say that you do what's in parentheses first, then exponents (none here), then multiplication AND division in a left-to-right manner. So it's 9. Google calculator gets it RIGHT; they're just throwing in the parentheses that are IMPLIED by order of ops.
You have to get rid of the parenthesis before anything. You still have the parenthesis.
The answer is 1, why? 6/2(2+1) do what's inside the parenthesis first = 6/2(3) u still have to get rid of the parenthesis! u mult 2(3)= 6. 6/6= 1. google calculator gives u the wrong answer of 9 b/c it separates 6/2 * 2+1. The parenthesis doesn't go away just b/c u have done the prob inside of it.
Anyone who can't figure out a simple problem like this, need to take 6th grade math over.
Clearly the answer is 1.
Yep, and good riddance!
9 is correct. Find someone who said 1, and beat them up instead.
For everyone who thinks it's one you have to do the parentheses first and follow PEDMAS
No, sorry, just kidding! This has been an ordeal. But hey, I think we're about to be put out of our misery, since this poll is a.l.m.o.s.t at the bottom of the list. Surely it's about to disappear? Adios, 6/2(2+1)!
The answer is nine. Hands down. No exceptions. Just Google it if you think it's one. I'm sick of this. If you think it should be one, go find your own planet to populate where you can create your own order of operations.
<sigh> PEMDAS, including the left-to-right part of it, tells us exactly which of those is correct.
It WOULD be clearer to everyone if the additional parentheses were thrown in, but they're not really necessary if one follows *standard* order of operations. Check some standard math sites.
NOT an issue of orders of operations (pemdas), but DENOMINATORS!! it is ambiguous whether it's 6/(2(2+1)) or (6/2)*(2+1)
I can only count to Potato.
Are we supposed to use standard math or Obama math?
Not quite. Standard order of operations says that everything after the "/" doesn't automatically become the denominator. You do what's in parentheses first: (2+1) = 3. Then any exponents (none here.) Then multiplication AND division, in a left-to-right direction. So 6/2 = 3. Then 3 x 3 = 9.
They have, they just forget (or didn't learn) that left-to-right business.
