Have you ever taken a class in reasoning or rhetoric?
I had a course in logic in college in about 1965. It was one of the best courses I've ever taken.
Personally, I think a course in logic should be part of every high school's curriculum.
Definitely agree, I think it would help solve a lot of communication issues in politics.
I'd like to think so. I also advocate for a high-school course in basic statistics - about how to design ways to collect data, analyze & interpret them. I think it would help people as consumers of commercial goods (re advertising) as well as
understanding political stuff (being able to shoot down bad analyses, & see where bias has played a part).
Yeah, it's called "life". Boom. -drops the mic-
Unfortunately that doesn't doesn't seem to work for most people.
I took logic, but I don't think it's really the same as you're talking about. We didn't go into the different fallacies or anything, but it did help me understand the structure of arguments.
Asjleu, could you explain some of these fallacies or refer us to an easily understood reference? Why don't you post some questions about some common fallacies? Just a thought.
I'd have to think about how to word them. But I'll think about it.
No. I wish I could take it, but I don't have time for it
Yes and don't ever do it thinking its an easy elective.
Both my kids think it's easy, well not easy but not that difficult,
It's simple concepts broken down in detail.
Logic 101. After the first test the prof said the TAs were "embarrassed" by the answers.
I wish I had space in my schedule for stuff like that.
When you get to college, it's required of a liberal arts degree.
Well, I should say, some kind of philosophy is.
Dang I never seen that class, I so would have taken it... But I don't think I did to bad without it... Lol
It's fascinating stuff, how often people use fallacies. They use them constantly on here... Makes me facepalm.
You got that right
It was an ad populum fallacy that did it. One of the more common ones here.
Well people are gonna use what they can to prove they're point.. Even if it's wrong
