Workplace Monday: would you rather work for a boss who is a genius (but also a micro-manager), or one who is utterly incompetent (but leaves you alone)?

If I am going 2 b under someone they better know how to work more than just their mouth (insert [if you know what I mean] pic now)

I have reported to both recently, and I vote for the distant moron - until he gets fired anyway.

Lol this is the Republican's strategy for President.

10/22/13 1:21 pm

I've worked for both. Prefer genius but without the micro management. Had one boss who had me counting nails for a job. Told him he was an idiot, 50 lb box, ration nails per board?

It think you might leaner from a genius not so much from the dummy.

I'm thinking Bill Gates or Steve Jobs vs (insert moron's name here).

10/22/13 5:39 am

I've done both & am a genius type myself but I manage like the moron. Give me the moron. I need breathing room when I work.

10/22/13 5:39 am

I've worked for a distant moron. It was wonderful. He was awesome at time off requests but knew nothing about the job. I wrote my own performance evaluations for him and looked at the budget to figure pay increases. He just signed off on it.

go with the moron. In an ideal world the genius would be successful and the moron would fail, so it would be to your advantage to work for the genius. However, experience leads me to believe the moron will get ahead and the genius will be fired.

It would be tough, but I would learn!

The second one sounds exactly like Michael Scott.

It depends if you really love the job.

Actually neither boss type works for me. The boss should be a leader. Doesn't have to be the most intelligent. Needs the ability to direct employees to operate as a team with common goals.

I've done the distant moron & that was HORRIBLE. I'm willing to give the Genius Micro a try, especially, if he/she is open to ideas. I don't mind following the rules & I HATE not knowing form moment to moment which rules your boss wants to follow.

I've yet to meet a genius boss. But I have encountered a few morons. That is why I have my own business. What you want is a boss who is fair and trusts you to do your job.

Even though I like to be left alone, prude in my organization and place in community would cause much disdain for a moron. Might manage the micro-manager, as at least has intelligence to have success in reverse manipulation. Accomplished today. :)

I'm working for the moron now. I would welcome the change.

If a boss is micro-managing, then they're not a genius...

Got a micro manager now. I spend more time dreaming up elaborate murder scenarios for him than working. Let me be and I'll get the job done!

I hate being micro-manged, but working for a genius could offer enough learning opportunities to make it worthwhile. Plus, the business is more likely to be successful, which means higher wages for me.

I think there is a big difference in working for a genius micro manager, vs just a micro manager.

I agree with you. You will learn so much from the genius that it would be worth it. Its not like he is just hovering over you just to look like he's managing.

I absolutely cannot stand being micro managed. I'm the kind of person that goes above and beyond at the work. Do not tell me how to do my job I know what to do.

I'm sad to say I've worked for both.
I worked for an incredible boss whose position in the company changed so she wasn't in my chain of command but I secured a mentor and she will always be a boss I aspire to find again.

I already work with enough idiots. I wouldn't be able to work under one.

10/21/13 3:21 pm

I've already worked for some morons, definitely not my preference. Rather work for a genius who respects those who work for him. I've had bot and the genius is the better choice. Micro-managing is secondary, you still have the opportunity to learn.

10/21/13 3:02 pm

I know how to manage micromanagers... Gimmie one of those... Try also keep me more on point.

Might depend on the job. Does the boss's incompetence impact me? In my last job I was always waiting for my boss to do something so that I could then do my part. I'd be sitting at my desk bored all day waiting for her to do one stinking thing.

10/21/13 7:21 pm

how can a boss' incompentence not effect you?

10/21/13 2:25 pm

My boss is a micromanager. When he goes on vacation I am so much more productive.

10/21/13 2:25 pm

I've worked for an incompetent micromanager before.... :/

Genius micromanagers get a new idea every other day. Ignore their ADD and figure out how to convince them you're working on the stuff they temporarily think is important but isn't.

Incompetent managers tend to get afraid you'll take their job, and manufacture crap about you to get you fired.

If he's a genuis, he will only find out if that you're useless if you are useless.

If you're worth something, the genuis will see that.

i picked genius just because ive yet to actually meet one yet :) lol
