Last night, I celebrated with some buddies. We debated politics, and one got nasty because I said I lean Republican. He is a staunch democrat. He headbutted me, so I pulled my switchblade. Well, here the Q: is pulling a weapon on a buddy justified?

If he head butted you he meant to cause harm, pulling a blade to defend yourself is justified. He's a narrow minded prick, don't dwell on it.

Never. Do not do that. That is not okay.

Only if they honestly try to hurt you.

I agree. It's not ok to threaten for disagreeing with you.

Self defense. Bit in your case you should have seen that coming. He's a democrat.

Yes, if in self-defense. It doesn't matter the you know the person or not.

Sadly I see that very frequently. Playful knife fighting. It's immature and dangerous.

I would have done the same. Or pulled a gun if I had one.

At least it extinguished a stupid prejudice I had. I thought all Democrats are sweet and huggable. I know, foolish idea ;)

My friends and I used to pull stuff on each other all the time but never in a angry manor. Always just in fun.

Only if your life is in danger, & I wouldn't consider them a "buddy" after that.

Nor do I. We're not buddies anymore.

Well, that's good, I guess. Who needs a buddy who will do that to you, over basically a philosophical argument.

Well, my face was in danger, not my life.

Well, since he headbutted me, I saw only two alternatives: a fistfight, which I'm not good at, or threaten him into peace.
It's an ugly occurrence but boys will be boys. First menacing Democrat I've met though ;)

Walking away, or just laughing at them, weren't options? "Threatening him into peace" might turn into something else if he had happened to have a knife. Or a gun.

No option to walk away. He was unarmed but may have been the better fighter though I can't tell, it didn't come to blows.

Susan: he's a Democrat. He doesn't believe in guns :)

I guess he's not one of my friends who are Democrats (or some other flavor of liberal) and DO "believe in guns."

Honestly, I really wish people wouldn't stereotype.
