Should jail sentences be used more to punish the wrong-doers, or more to ensure the safety of the rest of society?
putting people in jail for minor non violent crimes does nothing but make it worse by further embedding them in criminal culture and connections
Punishment is the main reason. It's the result of doing something, that we've decided as a society, cannot be allowed. Safety for the rest is just a byproduct. You can't lock people away if you suspect they're dangerous but they haven't done anything
What counts as justice?
Obviously both, but I think locking up violent criminals to protect the rest of us is ultimately more important than their punishment. I don't believe punishment is useless, but that we also need rehabilitation for criminals too.
Punishment is borderline useless IMO. Rehabilitation would be far more useful, cost-effective, and humane. This counter-productive need we seem to have to "punish" people only leads to a cycle of pain, abuse, and violence.
Really it is both reasons.
Actually I believe we need a more rehabilitative system
I think both are important but I would rather see effective rehabilitation.
Punishment, simply because there are still those out there they haven't caught, and so society is marginally no safer than if the prisoners were out.
Punishment for the sake of punishment is unreasonable.
I'm responsible for my own safety, I only need the government to punish the wrongdoers.
OMG! A Libertarian that actually admitted they need the government to do something!
Would you rather me be judge, jury, and executioner? I can do that if my rule is law.
No, I don't want you to turn America into a dictatorship.
America won't be, just my home and land.
In that case, go ahead and be the dictator of your own home/land. But bullets from your guns would not be allowed to travel past the border to your land.
I'm an expert marksman, they won't. I always hit what I aim at.
Great question but I think the answer is both along with an attempt at rehabilitation.
Yeah I know, I struggled with the wording to try to avoid "both" but it was really hard to avoid it.
I know I kinda worded it oddly.
