An 18 year old is running for mayor of Bedford, Ohio (a suburb of Cleveland). Could a teenager handle the job of being mayor? (Link inside with more information.)

Surely more innocent than a career politician. Regardless of party

I'm pretty sure a congress full of 18 year olds could do much better than our current one.

I think it's possible but I am definitely skeptical.

It's been done before.

Could any? Yeah, but not all are capable of doing the job well.
There are individuals MUCH older who don't deserve the positions which they hold.

That's why we have elections, so the voters can decide who is capable - based on ALL factors.

MrL, Alice, do you think we should allow 18 year olds to run for congress and the POTUS?

MrLucchese If curious, ask.

That's true, Alice. However - ageism is very prevalent in the minds of many. Not saying it's unrealistic for more individuals to win, but it's a hindrance.
Matt - I believe the age should be lowered, but not to 18.

Congress, maybe ... Is there an age limit now?

President is a far more complex job and I think it takes more life experience.

21 or 25. I debate the two numbers in my head. I lean more towards the latter. It seems more realistic.

Alice-25 for congressmen 39 for senators 35 for POTUS

Senators are congresspersons.
You mean representatives, I assume.

Not exactly, you can call a representative a congressman or a representative. Technically you can with a senator, but usually it's either representative and senator or congressmen and senator

Eh... Whatever floats your boat, I guess...

You have to be older to be Senator than President? That's a surprise to me!

Sorry 30 for senators

Yes I would say its possible. They would have the advantage of not being jaded to the world of politics, but the disadvantage of less life experience.

If the canidate is level headed with a good support system, I think it could work. Now that I am thinking, any canidate would benefit from being level headed with a good support system :)

Probably depends on the size of the town, but I suppose. I know a decent amount if countries allow 18 year olds to run for national offices, normally seats in their legislature, so I suppose it's possible.

Should we allow 18 year olds to run for congress or even POTUS?
