Do you think schools have the right to monitor students' social networking accounts, then judge and punish them based on their conduct?

No, especially when it's done outside if school.

Unless social media is being used during school time, schools should have no jurisdiction. Schools should worry about doing a better job with the 8 hours kids are in school, and stay clear of after hours.

Speaking as a principal....I see both sides of this. When the social media "stuff" intrudes on school time and interrupts or causes significant disruption (I.e cyber bullying ), then yes. Otherwise no.

No; that's the parents' responsibility. (If the school had a web site of its own with social features, I could see them monitoring use of it by students, but absolutely no farther than that.)

What to eat, how to talk, are we looking to get to a point where the system deems parents obsolete?

I don't think children under the age of 16 should have a social media site.

I agree, but let the parents decide. We didn't let ours do it.

Totally agree Avguy.
My kids won't be on social media for a long time, but we'll probably allow them
to use it on a completely open basis (we have the password) before they go off to college to help them learn to use it responsibly.

Ditto there MilkDud. I have my sons Facebook account and app installed on my handheld. I check it.

I'm using that as a poll question.

If you feel they need a phone, a flip will work.

NO! But parents have the right and responsibility to do so.

Yes. That is the parent's jurisdiction, not the school's.
