I always thought that statement was kind of... like, where did it come from? We were taught the exact opposite as kids; words are hurtful.
Words that hurt you are called slander.
I'd rather you just punch me in the face than hurt my feelings. It hurts less.
If it was true there wouldn't be all these kids depressed or committing suicide over words. Some people are sensitive and that should be respected.
It may not cause direct physical harm, but it has great potential for strong mental/emotional harm. Having gone through both physical and verbal abuse - words can hurt... A lot.
