A 17 year old honor student from MA. Received a call from an intoxicated friend needing a ride. When she arrived to get her friend the police arrived and determined she had not been drinking and let her go. She was later punished by her school.

I heard this on ESPN. I think they're trying to say that underage drinking is so bad that she shouldn't even associate herself with underage drinking.

I know, it's ridiculous! Also, she was an athlete, unless this is a completely different story

So if the drunk girl drove herself that would have been better?

Interesting. School policy states that student athletes cannot be caught at a party where alcohol is present. For whatever reason, she was there. If the school makes an exception and drops the charges, what message does that give? I see both sides.

Should she have told her friend you are on your own?

No, of she is telling the truth, then she certainly did the right thing. The question is about the schools response. Are they doing the right thing by not allowing an exception to the school policy? Allowing exceptions create other issues.

Either the school doesn't believe her story or the school doesn't wish to open Pandora's Box and start allowing exceptions to a very clear cut school policy. Get caught at a party with alcohol present and you get suspended from school activities.

Sometimes there is a price to pay for doing the right thing. Perhaps this is the price? Brutal, though....

Who said she ever set foot in the party?, as far as we know she was outside in public.

The driver should be rewarded as well should the drunk for being wise enough for doing the right thing. How can we preach about drunk driving and then punish when kids do what we ask.

Apparently the drunk girl should've called an adult instead of her friend and in turn, her friend should have notified an adult as well. Ridiculous.

As far as anyone can tell for being responsible.

The friend was drunk but wasn't and the police were there why? Punished by the school for what? This is confusing as hell...
