This would only be practical if one's constituents were also directly footing the bill for said salary.
Otherwise, what's to stop a Congressman's constituents from voting to make his salary $1,000,000,000/day at the rest of the nation's expense?

How will the constituents of a house district decide pay?

By an initiative at the district level

I think that that would be too complicated. I would rather have the state legislature determine the lay for all of the states congressmen.

Well they could do that but that would mean the Senators and Representatives would have a common interest. We have two houses of government to divide them. The Senate is supposed to represent states and the House is supposed to represent the people

I just don't see how pay could be determined by a voter initiative.

How would it be done? Would someone propose a number and then there would be a yes/no referendum? Would biters select a range?

skinner Jersey City

Yes it would be based on a range

And how would the specific salary be selected?

This gives the people or states more control over their representatives. Under the status quo the people have limited power over a representative currently in office and states have absolutely no control over Senators.

Independents what's your issue with this amendment?

Let's say a democrat wins in a district in TN a very red state....the republicans would vote to lower their salary same thing in a blue state

same thing would happen if a republican won a senate seat in Massachusetts the state legislature would lower their pay

Only if they disagree with his policy's. This would encourage the politician to become more moderate to appeal to their constituents.

Yes great idea. Each state would have pay for their own reps and senators to make this work.

I think it should be tied to inflation $100,000 a year and its equivalent in the future

Nay. If a republican comes from a strong democratic area and won. The democrats in his area gave control over his pay. I think the House should control the senate and vice versa

So what? This gives the people or states more control over their representatives. Under the status quo the people have limited power over a elected representative and states have no control over Senators.

Well I'm rather biased but I am strongly in favor of this amendment and would be very appreciative if this congress passed it. I would be more than happy to answer any questions about it.
