An agency I work with recently made the news for hiring the children of some managers to work summer jobs. They were hired without a competitive hiring process and there was no general announcement of the openings, nor a candidate pool.

I don't think so either. I usually see on of the managers walk through several times a day. Oddly, I never saw him once yesterday. Coincidence? Maybe.

A privately owned company can probably do that without any problems, but it definitely looks bad. If I'm a shareholder, "boss's kid" is not a job description I think we should be writing paychecks for.

As long as the agency is nongovernmental, I don't see a problem with it.

Agreed, though this is a state agency. Looks bad.

Not only does it look bad, but I dare say they could get fired for unethical practices.

I have no problem with it in private enterprise though. My older kids have worked for me, and I was much tougher on them than their peers!
