I just learned that Thursday October 17th is Spirit Day - a day to wear Purple in protest of bullying of LBGT youth. I'll be wearing purple - will you?
Ill wear a purple tie (its the best i can do due to school dress code)
I look like Barney.
I'm against bullying. We need to love one another but I also don't support the confused activities of the bullied. So I will address the bullies at the root insteadWhen you share the love of Jesus peoples lives are changed and they find it hard to hate
I'll be wearing purple, Shelly! :-)
I hate bulling and I'm going to wear all purple heck ill even dye my hair purple and paint my nails purple
Yea, and I'll also be listening to Deep Purple all day!!
There's all kinds of days to wear colors for something. But that doesn't mean I know why they're wearing that color. Only one I'm aware of is pink for breast cancer and red on Fridays until the troops come home.
I didn't know about red in Fridays until the troops come home, but if I saw more than a couple of people wearing Red I would ask what for and then I would know - that's why it is an awareness activity
No, but only because I don't have purple work clothes.
Purple is so depressing. It's the death color. Not for me.
I have very low standards for how I pick the colors I where, so I am easily swayed to wear what ever color is trending for any good reason. That being said, this does absolutely nothing to help LBGT youth. It's just trendy.
I was of the same opinion, but Shelly made some respectable points about it being a valuable opening to more definitive measures.
I think bullying occurs no matter what your sexual orientation is. Have you ever seen the documentary Bully?
I wear a uniform for work that does not allow alterations...
Will this work in Minnesota?
I don't know - good question. - LOL
I agree with the idea, but I don't see this action achieving very much.
It is just for awareness - gives people a chance to A) talk about why they are wearing purple and B) identify with others who wear purple
Ok, I can see that serving a role. Still, more definitive action is needed to follow it up.
I agree - I hope this isn't the only thing planned - I would imagine this is just an awareness campaign
Well, please keep us posted on further developments. I will see what purple I can come up with.
I hate purple, so I'll be supporting the cause in spirit! ;)
It turns out I don't have purple. I'll symbolically wear it though
I'll try to remember, I'm usually a bit spacey with dressing in the morning.
I have a purple tee shirt I will wear.
Why so angry
That was unnecessary. Perhaps an apology is in order?
Come to Oregon, you deserve a good punch in the nose
And so does whoever liked your comment, assuming it wasn't you too.
No, why are we just recognizing LGBT bullying? Other people are bullied too. I think it's another political social issue. I'll wear a colored shirt the day they recognize bullying of all types. Stop focusing on just one group.
No, because I hate groups taking colors and putting an innate meaning behind them so that people make assumptions about you based on what color you're wearing, your car is, your nails are painted, ect. Think of pink or rainbow. Can't we just have colors be nothing more obvious than a color?
It's about as sensical as if we assigned numbers. Wear/write 17 on your person for support of breast cancer! 32 for anti bullying! 97 for gay rights! 30124 to save the turtles!
Do you have the same issue with Red and Gold for the San Francisco 49ers or even Red/White and Blue for the USA? If not then I don't understand your point
@shelly while a good point, I think it is misplaced. Red and Gold for the San Francisco 49ers is one: a team with team colors, and two, based on historical established history. Red/White and Blue for the USA isa national symbol/colors.
The act is different and more like when the rainbow was hijacked from being a religious symbol to something different. 'Claiming' colors to stand for this or that can be problematic.
EMC - those things started somewhere. I don't see the difference
It's like this: alright guys, on Wednesday, wear white in support of the 'being straight community.' The breast cancer symbol is now the symbol for that movement.
Do you see any issues with this? It's different than a national team or country colors
What ECM said. If it's a sports team or national colors, it's different. Though I still dislike it. I'd like to wear red and grey or blue and yellow here together. Yet everyone thinks football. Red white and blue, that's not an otherwise overly common combination. And generally also requires stars,
stripes, or a holiday to be associated automatically with patriotism. If I wear blue jeans and a white/red shirt, it's not screaming AMERICA. A shirt with a rainbow? Screams I'm for gay rights. A pink one this month? Breast cancer companies.
What is spirit day? Seriously.
Seriously - according to the internet (after I heard about it on MSNBC) it is a day to wear purple for LGBT people
If I remember to wear people lol, my schools color is purple :p is there any reason for choosing purple? I would've expected something like rainbows
No, not bc I am not against bullying, but because I really hate that color so I don't anything purple.
How is wearing a specific color accomplishing anything? No I won't be. Only because I have nothing purple. Honestly, solidarity and/or boycotts do very little. Just my opinion.
I don't have anything purple but I will defend anyone being put down because they are LGBT.
Why not just defend people regardless? No bullying is "worst", it's destructive be it for your orientation, skin color, hair color, weight, wearing glasses or dresses or secondhand clothes, looking too old/young, being too smart/stupid...
I agree, and I'm sick of people being put down for being " weird" or " strange" because of someone's twisted ideology that doesn't permit diversity.
I'm not intimidated by people who are different. They amuse me but I accept their humanity.
I don't have any purple clothes. But I am anti bully.
I'll take any opportunity to show my support for the LGBT community.
Me too Camigirl and against bullying of any kind really
I don't have anything purple.
I don't own any purple clothes.
Not my color.
I don't like purple. Perhaps blue, I tend to like to wear grays and I love earthy kinda greens.
It may be dark blue due to my being colorblind but I'll try
I'll be wearing purple, but only bc it's Purple Thursday like every week... My friend started it, I joined, we're the coolest kids in school :P
What school? (Just curious)
Probably not one you've heard of. It's super small - although our girls basketball team did win division championships last year!
Are you in SoCal? (Otherwise known as the way cooler part of CA)
Try me, I've heard of many schools.
I'm in SoCal. Ventura county to be more exact
Oh! You're just one county below me! Heard of Providence Hall?
I've heard of it
You could come join us for Purple Polo Thursday.
I have school in Newbury park. I doubt I could get there
Why not just support not bullying, why single groups out?
Because bullying in general is always covered.
If it were, there'd be no need for a protest day
Is it? That's the day I plan on coming out to my friends. Guess I'll break out the purple long sleeved shirt then
My phone froze sorry for the double post...
That's okay - are you being serious
That sounded harsh - I hope you are being serious - that would be cool
Am I serious about me coming out? Of course! I've been running the conversation through my head for the last week. One of my friends already knows so that might make it easier but I'm still super anxious. As for the purple shirt, I'll only be wearing it if it's cold enough, ja feel?
And the reason I planned Thursday is because I'm away at college and I go home for break Wednesday. Thursday is the discount day at BWW and we usually go. I don't plan on doing it in the restaurant but yeah
I do feel - good for you. Sorry I questioned you. I hope it works out really well for you :-)
I'll wear yellow
Only because I don't own anything purple...
Take a marker and color a white shirt :) jk
Ha, I'll have to come up with something creative then ;)
We'll see. The 17th is a lot of days from now, so even if I say yes today, who knows what's actually going to happen by the time we get there?
As usual, I won't be leaving the house, so I'll be in my usual white t-shirt and black shorts. But good poll, Shelly. ❤️
You, Sis, are one great hugger. :-)
Yes, to support my friend. I also don't think bulling for any reason is okay. I will wear purple for sure.
Can't I have civil war history club. Need to wear my American shirt and Gettysburg tie.
Do you have any purple wristbands or anything?
My school doesn't allow wrist bands or necklaces. I go to a Jesuit school which is VERY sticked with dress code
I'm not allowed to wear purple
