Is homophobia real or is it just another excuse for being an asshole?

I would go with real. We are very susceptible to our youthful training. Children raised as Communists by communists have a communist philosophy, usually for life. How long did it take you to get past some of your early training?

It's real. "Phobia" can also mean a strong dislike, and there are certainly people who dislike homosexuality. (I'm not sure what would constitute an "excuse for being an asshole," anyway - isn't there always *some* reason why a person acts

like an asshole?) I try not to use "homophobia" because people seem to think it means *only* a fear, and I think fear is seldom really the case. Using the word just derails discussion about homosexuality itself, in my opinion. So I don't.

Homophobia is real, but it is miss used. Homophobia is the "fear of the same" it is the most miss used word. Disagreement does not mean fear

Homophobia is mostly subconscious but real. Most straight can't imagine the desire to be gay so it threatens their own sexuality. It's more than just a disagreement but it is based on a deep seated misunderstanding of human sexuality.

That doesn't mean they "fear the same." Which is what homophobia means. And it doesn't mean they fear gays, or being gay

So if they don't "fear" something about it why are they so strident about it?

Because they disagree with it, there is a difference between disagreement and fear. I fear teenage women(which Is why I'm single) but I don't hate them. I hate golf, but I don't fear it
