In general, has the sexual revolution had more of a positive effect or more of a negative effect on interpersonal relationships in our society?

The fact that sexual topics are now more openly discussed is a positive. The fact that something so universal was a taboo made no sense. STDs and the objectifying of people are a negative side of the coin. It's a difficult question. The pre-sexual revolution relationship circumstances were inadequate, and they still are today, though in vastly different ways.

Agreed. I would add that I think the puritanical views we had which were inherently oppressive, led to the rev.

It’s a mixed bag.

Yes, women are more empowered and less expectations of things like being a virgin when married or living at home until married, or the stigma of being an “old maid” at 29.

But on the other end, women are different than men. Most (younger) men don’t treat them like ladies anymore such as opening doors, or just courtesy in general.

It used to be one gal to every guy. Now it is 80% of girls to the top 20% of guys, 20% of girls to the next tier of men, and a TON of incels.

It’s been very positive. Seeing women feel just as comfortable as men in the classroom, and being more likely to befriend their male peers, is very inspiring to see. If men can’t handle that, that’s their own problem.

Women were excluded from politics and the workplace.

Women should be able to enjoy sex just as much as a man.

The sexual revolution was about empowerment.

Just because women can fully participate in society doesn’t mean that all women are promiscuous.

Men have always been entitled to have sex yet expected women to be virgins. Who exactly are they having sex with? It’s a double standard.

There’s liberty in being single. Marriage isn’t for everyone.

My word, there are so many variables that go into this, it would make a fabulous topic for a dissertation.

Bottom line, I think there’s both good and bad. But some of the negative ramifications have been huge, such as ending up with hordes of poor, single moms and massive numbers of kids grow up without fathers. Sexual economics no longer favors women as it once did either leaving us wielding far less power than we used to. People don’t have to live miserably in various types of lives and marriages they don’t want anymore though, so that’s good.

But if I take it up to just the 30,000 foot view: I’m going with a guess that there’s probably more negative than positive that’s come out of it, unfortunately.

It’s unleashed a Pandora’s box of horrors: increased sexually transmitted diseases, abortions, adultery, and decreased sexual satisfaction. It has made us a society that is less safe, less trusting, and less happy.

I think it's hard to tell. People who get married still tend to take it very seriously. People who never wanted a serious relationship no longer feel pressure to have one. There is a whole spectrum of people between those two extremes who can do what they want now without feeling pressured to conform to a relationship idea they disagree with. Many people didn't like those societal norms far before there was a sexual revolution. I do understand how you could see it as a disaster but I also think you could see it as a change that had been coming for a long time.

The sexual revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race.

To be fair, I don’t think it’s fair to describe the sexual revolution as a global phenomenon. While the West certainly became more loose, other parts of the world have maintained more sexual mores.
