You can now buy DIY DNA modifying home kits and genetically modify the DNA of living organisms. For example, people are using them to genetically modify bacteria, viruses, mice, frogs, dogs, and even themselves. Should this be legal?
Those idiots are playing with the destruction of the human race. Of course it should be against the law. One incorrectly modified bacterium or virus could start a pandemic.
Good way to accidentally cause an extinction level event... people are so stupid. 🙄
True and there are people who have the agenda to do so.
Why do they do stuff like this?
This is awesome. Chances of zombie apocalypse just went from .0000000000000000000001% to .0000000000001%
And now you can grow that second penis you always wanted.
Right on my forehead. Think of the possibilities
No. I don’t want to make myself nauseous.
I remember this movie. The zombies were really fast.
Just run to the dollar store and grab a CRISPR, taq polymerase, and some buffer. 😂
The notion that resequencing is occurring in someone’s garage is a terrifying thing.
This sounds absolutely wonderful!

What would you have to do to get a sample of it? 😳
That seems nuts to me. Speaking as someone with a PhD in genetics.
I wonder if there are some built-in limitations to what can actually be done. Doesn’t sound like it just from reading about what a couple of people have done, but I hope that’s wrong.
Actual scientists have to go through a *lot* of red tape and paperwork to be funded, at least, for genetic changes, and I’m quite sure there are regulations on what’s allowed and what isn’t. I don’t know what they are though; I never got into that kind of stuff.
The linked article is 2 years old, but I googled and got some hits showing it was still being talked about as reality as recently as a few months ago.
Some people have been live streaming their self experiments. The founder of the main company selling these kits did as well as another with a home made herpes virus “treatment” and another injected himself with a HIV experiment, for example. www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2018/02/biohacking-stunts-crispr/553511/
Yes, those are 2 that I read about just now. Thanks for the link, though!
Netflix has a docuseries called “unnatural selection” if you want to check that out.
I’m afraid to look.
Only half kidding.
Thanks to CRISPR it’s really become something that can have dramatic positive results as well as catastrophic negative consequences.
I don’t understand how (most) people who might attempt it would have any clue what they are doing. I’ll have to read more about it when I get a chance. (I’m kinda swamped right now, though.)
There’s actually YouTube videos on how to do it. 😳
Not promoting this company but here is what comes in this kit which includes instructions. www.the-odin.com/diy-crispr-kit/
Obviously this should be illegal, it seems to me that its unethical regardless of what moral philosophy you subscribe to. I also find it apparent that eventually people will do this to their children and then essentially I believe that a new type of racism will develop based on genetic modification and those modified will subjugate those not and will be the 1% with a slave class of the regular people. Eventually race war will break out and society as a whole will have been set back.
The people pushing this home modifying movement are actually making the opposite argument. They want everyone to be able to genetically enhance themselves so not just certain people are able to do it.
This was... a joke. I apologize I should have marked it in some way. I believe the first sentence but the rest was simply mindless humor because I am tired and thought that it was funny, it sort of seemed like something that would happen on Rick & Morty.
I thought you started out good and then went off the deep end. Glad to hear you aren’t one of those people. 😂😂😂
So now anybody can be a crazy evil scientist modify the plague or any other deadly disease
What could go wrong?
