Is there seriously no way to delete your own comments on this app? If there is, how?

That is by design. It keeps people from revising. Get it right the first time and commit, and own your mistakes. ✅

No. And it’s good that it’s not an option.
People would abuse it by using it to distort conversations and make respondents appear to be saying something they aren’t.

There is no way to edit or delete comments.

I don’t think there is, but neither do I think there should be. Think of it like having a conversation in real life. You can’t unsay something, all you can do is explain, apologize, or try to make it right. That’s all part of social interaction. It’s also part of the concept of preserving the record. Preserving history. Erasing history just doesn’t feel right in any context. It’s like, if you did it, you own it. Knowing comments can’t be erased (or that they WILL be screen-shotted anyway, like on Twitter) might help encourage people to be a little more thoughtful.

When you submit, you commit. Think about what you post carefully. Proofread. Expect to get burned from time to time. We all do....

And prepare to be humbled at times after a regrettable post.

Yeah, I get that, I just think people should have the ability to delete comments they made in anger. Imagine if you couldn’t delete your tweets or YouTube videos or Facebook posts. That could get a good person in serious trouble due to drunkenness or anger. If I was a app maker, I’d want people to be the happiest they can be on my app, and how can you be happy on an app that you’re guilty you ever used? The answer is you can’t be. The app should do something like reddit, where it still shows the replies but it says “this comment has been deleted.” Or at least something, ya know.

Deleting or editing comments can lead to a much worse situation. Deleting can orphan other people’s comments in the same thread and they no longer make sense. And editing can be abused, making and original post read completely differently, thus cause the other posters to look stupid or petty.

The way it’s done on SOH will grow on you. Just be thoughtful and be careful what you write. Or, if you’re being a dick, own it and live up to it.

No, there isn’t. Sorry!

In some *extreme* situations, where someone had inadvertently posted personal information, say like their phone number or address, and wants it removed, I think SoH has actually removed the comment - but maybe once or twice in the 7 years I’ve been here. If that’s the situation, the only recourse is to send an email to info@showofhands.com explaining the situation (and giving your user name); and it’s better if it is sent from the email address in your Profile.

However, chances are slim that you’d hear anything back, because... that’s just the way it’s been for a good while now. But it couldn’t hurt to try...

If it’s just something you regret saying, or it’s full of grammar/spelling error, there’s no chance of getting that removed.

If it’s in one of your own polls, you can close the poll. The poll (and comment) is still there, but people would have to deliberately look for it, to see the comment.

Why, do they not care about the people on this app? Did they just... abandon it without improving it? Wow

I think the delete feature, especially on a POLITICAL APP where people get angry and say regrettable things is essential.

Simple !
Don't comment when drunk or not in control of yourself.

Tony was always opposed to editing, because he thought it would be misused.

Heck, we *know* it would be misused.

People could post one thing, and then change it to something different and a misrepresentation of what the replied implied.

I understand. I just hate my bad grammar or fat fingers.

Makes sense and yeah my issue is autocorrect that drives me nuts when you mean one thing and it changes it to something completely did fêtent

No one is perfect, but proofreading helps tremendously. As I told my students too many times to count: Proofread!! Also, do not post in anger. Hesitation can sometimes be a good thing. I imagine that almost everyone on here has typed long comments and responses that they then deleted and never posted.

I turn off my autocorrect and leave on the word suggest on. I find my misspellings easier. But not my grammar. And I can proofread my own material all day and not see a mistake. You need someone else to look at it. Now that’s a common mistake students make. Not letting someone else proofread.
