NT City voters decided to amend the city’s constitution, restructuring primary and special elections to operate under a new ranked-choice voting system, which allows voters to rank their top five candidates on the ballot according to preference.

How is it rigging an election? Just show up and rank the candidates in order that you like them.

The Right hates it because it subverts the dark money they’ve worked so hard to infuse. They don’t want to listen to the People.

Doesn’t Maine do that too?
I think it’s great... candidates aren’t so Party-dependent that way. Seems to be a good way to break up the stranglehold of the Rs & Ds.

Ranked choice voting is supported by AOC.

Is that supposed to make me not like it? I supported AOC from the day she announced her candadacy.

Just stating a fact. Each person can consider it as he/she wishes. I don’t remember you having a problem with the statement made about Yang supporting it.

Because that statement was made in the context of wanting me to like Yang.

I apologize if that came off as rude. Sometimes I can be more combative than I intend to be.

I like yang. Bernie is still my no. 1 but I could be almost as happy if yang were the nominee.

Following are two huge problems with rank choice voting.

If you rank only three of the five names on the ballot and those three are all eliminated, your ballot will not be counted at all in the final vote. You will have no vote on the two leading candidates.

Maine used rank choice voting in 2018. In the second congressional district, Republican Poliquin led Democrat Golden by about 2,000 votes when the ballots had been counted. However, rank choice voting made Democrat Golden the winner because the votes that were cast for two Independent candidates went to him.

I don’t believe most Americans are in favor of this once they understand the ramifications.

You can just... Rank all five candidates? And yes, that's because the majority of the people that voted for those independent candidates put the Democratic candidate as their second choice.

historylover

Still a horrible idea, and many people do not want to rank people that they would never want to vote for.

RatBaby
11/06/19 2:43 pm

Then don't? That's the point, the choice is given to the voter.

Ebola007 Florida
11/06/19 2:56 pm

That’s why it’s a terrible idea 💡.

RatBaby
11/06/19 2:57 pm

Because it gives choice to the voter? Because it removes having to vote strategically? Because it gives third parties a chance? I don't think I follow.

Ebola007 Florida
11/06/19 3:24 pm

It takes away the voters choice.

credo Vote your conscience
11/06/19 4:43 pm

It gives the voters more choice.

Ebola007 Florida
11/06/19 5:09 pm

How so? Their vote could go to someone they never intended to vote for.

Ebola007 Florida
11/06/19 5:12 pm

It leads to a bastardization of the voting process.

RatBaby
11/06/19 5:14 pm

They don't HAVE to rank any candidate.

RatBaby
11/06/19 5:15 pm

You know if you want you can just rank your first choice and it's the same as normal fptp voting right?

Ebola007 Florida
11/06/19 5:18 pm

You can plainly see in @historylover example where someone who won lost when the votes of those who didn’t vote for either major candidate were given to his opponent

RatBaby
11/06/19 5:24 pm

Yes. Because those people listed him as their number 2 choice, so he got the most votes. That's like saying your team got the fewer points but had the ball for longer.

RatBaby
11/06/19 5:29 pm

And they DID vote for the major candidate. Just second choice.

Ebola007 Florida
11/06/19 5:31 pm

Exactly. You’re making my point. Each voter should cast one vote for their candidate of choice and whoever gets the most votes should win.

RatBaby
11/06/19 5:32 pm

Why? Thats not how the presidency works. This eliminates the "lesser of the evils" voting singlehandedly. Voting for third parties isn't throwing your vote away anymore.

Ebola007 Florida
11/06/19 5:55 pm

Did the 3rd party candidates win? No. Why should another candidate get their votes?

RatBaby
11/06/19 5:55 pm

Because those people put them down as their second choice.

Ebola007 Florida
11/06/19 7:07 pm

That’s exactly what I’m against.

RatBaby
11/06/19 7:40 pm

Why?

credo Vote your conscience
11/07/19 4:39 pm

It only goes to someone else if their first choice has already been eliminated, it's a way to still have a say it that happens.

Ebola007 Florida
11/07/19 5:54 pm

You do have a say by voting for the candidates that you want. Your vote shouldn’t count for anyone else.

RatBaby
11/07/19 6:11 pm

Yes. Your vote counts for the candidates you want. In order of preference.

RatBaby
11/07/19 6:28 pm

You keep saying that, but you have yet to provide a reason.

Ebola007 Florida
11/07/19 7:03 pm

RatBaby

All you've said is "it's a terrible idea"

RatBaby
11/07/19 7:38 pm

I'm starting to think you just don't understand how it works.

credo Vote your conscience
11/07/19 7:40 pm

If you don't want your vote to go to someone just don't list them in your ranking. It's that simple.

But if you want to still have some say in the event that your favorite is eliminated, then list a second favorite. Or a third, fourth, etc. It's a way to avoid having to vote for a lesser of two evils if you think your favorite candidate isn't going to win, you can list your favorite first, and if not enough people like them for them to win, then your vote will go to whoever you ranked next, or to no one if you chose not to rank anyone else.

Ebola007 Florida

So it’s like playing roulette. No thanks. I’m not for votes for one person being given to my opponent because they were stupid enough to vote for someone who couldn’t win. If you’re that stupid you don’t deserve a second chance.

RatBaby
11/08/19 12:10 pm

"like playing roulette" implies randomness. There's nothing random about it.
