That oversimplifies the historical context of the races.
In 1984 Ronald Regan was very popular and swept the country with 525 electoral votes.
In 2008 Sarah Palin didn’t stand a chance against Obama because America was tired of Bush and the Republicans policies.
In 2016 a few million Americans didn’t like Hillary ( Emails, Benghazi) and decided to give Trump a chance. She did win the popular vote but lost because of the Electoral College Trump winning 306-232.
So no I don’t think they need to “take a hint” I just think they happened to be n the wrong side of history at that time.
