As terrible as the recent event with the cartels and American families is, it’s yet more proof that Americans should not be living in Mexico (or outside industrialized, first world nations), and should absolutely not bring children there.

Do you realize how many times I see stories of ignorant young first world western women or couples who travel to dangerous countries thinking everything will be fine and end up being kidnapped and killed? Outside our countries, the world is an extremely dangerous place for those who don’t know how to navigate it.

One learns by doing ... not by reading scary stories of one-offs.

Yeah. I’m gonna stop reading all those fear mongering anecdotes about people jumping off cliffs and dying. Time to try it for myself and see what I’ve been lied to about.

It is certainly a tragedy My understanding is the family were members of a Mormon offshoot that went to Mexico around 100 years ago so they could practice poligamy (though they no longer do) they have been in Mexico for decades. They weren't tourist.

Then they either should’ve left when it got dangerous or been better armed

Easy to say that, but lots of Americans have relatives in other areas of the world. You can’t just expect them to never see their families.

Should they, maybe not, but honestly it’s there choice and if anything happens it’s their fault.
