Last week, the Supreme Court allowed Alabama to deny a Muslim man’s request for an imam to be present at his execution. Alabama allows Christian chaplains to pray with inmates at executions upon request. Did the Supreme Court make the right decision?

This is inspiring a new question. You’re on death row and you can choose one guest and one person to pull the lever. Go.

Religious liberty means that everyone gets it or nobody gets it. This is a dangerous precedent.

No, that was a bad decision and unfair.

Horrible decision! And amazingly shortsighted... It sets a very bad precedent that may come back and bite people of faith (regardless of which faith they subscribe to).

A Muslim being executed for a crime❓That’s a shocker❗️Not letting the Oman pray that he get his complementary virgins for committing his crime after the execution❓PRICELESS‼️

If you don’t believe in religious liberty for those you disagree with, you don’t believe in it at all.

Hey I’m all for everyone’s religious freedom even a death row Muslim❗️I just see some real irony & contradiction here, with let’s respect everyone’s freedom of religion except a Christian who refuses to cater a Gay wedding reception & be persecuted & sent to jail for it‼️

MrsCrayonWax

I think you meant Imam. Also, this isn’t the same as the gay cake baker. This is about a right afforded to Christian death row inmates that was not afforded to a Muslim. It’s a clear violation of the first amendment. I’ve read two articles and welcome more in case I’m missing something.

Wax, sorry my mistake, imam instead Oman, I’m not much into the Islam or Muslim names or beliefs !

It’s just the name of the equivalent of their priest or pastor. Nothing that I’m up on.

Shippy, I’m receptive to the Christian baker argument, but it cuts both ways... you can’t argue for their religious freedom if you refuse to protect the religious freedom of others.

I except or condone repressing the faith of non Christians🤨❗️but that same freedom should be also reciprocated by other faiths & religions, which it isn’t, especially with Muslims & Islam as whole its probably among the most intolerant of them all😱‼️

Where do you draw the line? What if my religion says I must be free? Then it’s ok to trample on my religious liberty? Is it written anywhere that prisons must, by law, allow religious figures into the DP room? Genuinely curious

omniku dot com
02/12/19 5:43 pm

I don’t know, but if they’re going to allow a minister in they should allow other religious advisors in. Or they should make the chaplain stand outside the glass like they did for the imam. Bottom line is, it should be the same standard regardless of faith.

That makes sense to me, although unless there’s a federal law saying which visitors you’re allowed to have, then it’s up to the states, who may leave it up to the prisons.

In my opinion, this is a clear and flagrant violation of the Establishment and Free Exercise Clauses of the First Amendment. It’s constitutionally inconsistent to allow one faith’s clergy to be present yet bar other’s. Hopefully this is something that all who value religious liberty can agree on.

A case in point, according to Sharia Law, my wife could, & should be arrested for walking our dog in public, as stated by my not so friendly Muslim neighbor down the street😡❗️

MrsCrayonWax
02/12/19 2:29 pm

In Islam, dogs are considered haram or bad but sharia isn’t the law of the land here and isn’t recognized. So they can effectively go pound salt.
