I am someone who is skeptical of President Trump getting re-elected in 2020, but if the Democratic Party continues to drift farther left and push for socialist ideals, they have no chance of getting independent swing votes that are needed to win.

This depends on how crazy our country has become, how much the leftist voters hate America and long to destroy it, and how much they believe that Trump is the evil boogey man.

I hope that you are right. Imagine what it would be like if these far left people win, and implement these ideas.

Moving back towards the center, from the unsupportably too far right they’ve drifted towards in recent years, is how they’ve been gaining my (fastidiously independent) support.

Depends if the Democrats can convince the fed to increase interest rates and reverse what they inflated under Obama. Might cause a recession.

Stop acting like Venezuela is a Democrat’s dream. They had a dictator for fuck sake. Pure socialism like that is not what democrats want and if you had an ounce of sense you would know that. Democrats aren’t all AOC and Warren.

Polling suggests that the majority of people (even republicans) are unhappy about the GOP tax cuts. If the economy goes into a recession and the democrats pass a form of universal healthcare that ends up being blocked by the GOP i think the democrats would have a good shot at beating him. They won’t win on social issues they should focus on economics and dinner take issues.

She was polled to win the popular vote, which she did. She was polling within the margin of error in Michigan before the election. Trump was leading in some polls in Pennsylvania before he won. Trump was leading in Florida before he won. Iowa and Ohio were likely going to trump based on polls too. The polls were correct, blame the media for making the election seem like a sure thing for her when it really wasn’t.

Wisconsin is the only state where she consistently led but ended up losing, but that’s redundant as she would’ve lost if she won in Wisconsin but lost everywhere else as the polling suggested as likely.

Only rammussen had polling anywhere close to what happened. All the other polls showed Hillary winning by a large margin. Not sure why you think otherwise.

I don’t think that is true.
Republican populism brought us tax cuts for the wealthy.
Democrat populism offers universal access to healthcare and a return of workers rights.
I think many of Trump supporters would support that.

If the hardcore leftist-democrats keep saying what they really think (government takeover of everything) nobody sane would ever vote for them again.

So crazy how a moderate democrat Howard Shultz is completely “electable” but the democrats treat him like he’s a Nazi.

I have a different take, with a recession looming and people actually exhausted from the way Trump governs, and the general consensus that the country is moving in the wrong direction, the backlash will be so strong that even a far left Democrat will have a chance of beating Trump!

bnnt Los Angeles

I think that the democrats play, they see this as an opportunity to get all far-leftists in and the media wants it and will unapologetically support it any way they can.

I predict as things are now, if there’s proven no Russian ties to Trump in the mueller investigation and he gets his (partial) wall - Trump will get re-elected.

Keyanna's comment below says it perfectly, 2020 in a nutshell. I shouldn't be surprised by now, but I can't believe the Democrats are actually this stupid. When your campaign rides on enthusiasm for socialism and infanticide, you make Trump look desirable by comparison.

Yes, the electoral college has caused democratic nominees to lose elections even though a majority voted for them overall. However, I don’t think it’s a good idea to change how we have done elections in the last 300 years just because one side feels they haven’t “won enough.” It would be different if republicans consistently won elections and would not get the popular vote, but it isn’t like that at all. We have shifted from Democrat to Republican pretty consistently throughout the last 90 years so why is it such an issue now. It’s fair and makes it balance so that both parties have a chance of winning...

kscott516 Masks fail

First, she didn’t win the popular vote legitimately, not that the popular vote matters. There was rampant illegal voting and election fraud happening in 2016 and again in 2018. Why do you think there were multiple states that suddenly “found” votes for Democrats but not Republicans? They threw out legit ballots and brought in already-filled our ballots for ads.

Second, Trump has been gaining confidence from Independents and even some Democrats who are seeing the D Party for what it really is. Most have liberal leanings but don’t support socialism, infanticide, or illegal drug/child trafficking. Expect to see more of these stories in the news.

I heard about dead people and illegals voting, but I didn’t think it made a large impact on the election (popular vote) though... Oops...

It was even worse than that. Dem Supervisors of Elections had Rep ballots removed from the rolls and added Dem ballots that were pre-filled out after they realized they lost races they wanted to win. GA, FL, AZ to name a few. They also went to prisons and had inmates fill out ballots.

orgblu10 Shamerica

30% of the voters will vote Republican no matter what, 30% will vote Democratic no matter what. The majority of the 40% in the middle aren't going to buy in to the socialist agenda that the Dems appear to be hanging their hats on. If they can spin it to look like something other than what it is, they might have a chance. But with nutcases like AOC in front of the cameras promoting their philosophy, they're exposing themselves to be the lunatic fringe that they actually are. And most of that 40% will quickly dismiss them.

.Org- but remember the rust belt didn’t vote for Trump because they loved him, they voted for Trump for better economic opportunities, that really hasn’t happened for them, and if a recession hits no telling how they will vote next. They are tired of being left out, and just maybe the only thing left they haven’t tried, far left policies, might start to look good to them. πŸ€”

We'll see. There's a lot to be played out over the next two years in their economic situation. But if the Democrats try to out-leftist each other along the campaign trail, I'd be surprised if the blue collar voters there jump on that bandwagon.

zimmy, a recession is a big "if" and with how well the economy is going right now, I don’t see rust belt states switching to a radical socialist agenda that quickly.
