Prohibition has been blamed for starting the Mafia. Do you think organize crime would still have happened if prohibition not taking place?

The mafia has been around since the 1800s. I don't know about America, but.

Yes, but it was a huge opportunity for criminal activity.

Well yeah, of course. There is prognoses crime everywhere. Prohibition just helped them gain power.

Well yeah. But there’d probably be less cartels if things were legal. You don’t see any alcohol cartels lol

True but the mafia (and cartels) are driven by their need for power, greed, and money.

Meaning if it wasn’t alcohol, it would have been something else.

I’m saying that if drugs were legal like alcohol, what would they smuggle? Shoes? Lol

They would design the next drug that’s not approved and smuggle that.

The mafia was here well before prohibition.

Yes, but Prohibition opened all kinds of avenues — people like to drink and some will pay anything or go anywhere for it.
Just think, if Capone had paid taxes he would have gotten away with everything.

As long as there are laws there will be law breakers.

The Mafia was in Sicily long before prohibition. But illegal proceeds from booze filled the coffers of organized crime. Sex and drugs too.

The mafia was already a thing back in the mid-1800s, so I'm thinking prohibition had little to do with it. The opportunity for profit offered by prohibition may have accelerated its interest in America, but I doubt it was the only reason, and I'm not sure it, and other organized crime groups weren’t already established here before prohibition passed, much less went into effect.

Godfather part 2 depict NYC pretty well.
When I lived in Brooklyn all the store owners paid a little for protection. Or you bought your pizza products from mafia approved vendors. Our whole block would come out to by jeans from the back of a truck.

Also I think the Sopranos were pretty much on point.
