Should it be required that high school seniors pass a test similiar to the citizenship test immigrants take in order to graduate?

Definitely. When many of our citizens don’t even know who the Vice President is, we have a problem.

Not necessarily a formality such as that, but in practice they already do. In this state, graduation requirements include a total of 3 credits of social studies. 1 credit of US History, 1 credit of Contemporary World History, .5 credit of Civics, and .5 credit of social studies elective. The coursework required to pass those classes more than covers the dead-easy citizenship questions.

Yes. I brought the citizenship book to my friends BBQ and we went through questions as a drinking game.
It got woozy very fast.

Why, after they’ve had 12 years of education that included all that information, and for which they’ve had to pass multiple tests?

Seems our schools teach US history and govt for only a year at most. Kids learn more of a foreign language than US govt, history, and civics. And look how well Americans do with foreign language. 😔

I had some kind of history (often including an age-appropriate smattering of government) throughout grade school on a rotating basis: state one year, US the next: world the next; then repeat. In high school we had a year of American history, a year of world history, and, as a senior, a year of American government.

But that was back in the dark ages. I graduated from high school 55 years ago.

Well you need social 30 to graduate. 12 years of social class is probably good enough.

What is social 30? I’ve never heard of that. But I graduated from high school more than half a century ago.
